Pakistan agrees peace pact with pro-Taliban tribal fightersThe Pakistani army and pro-Taliban tribal militants signed a peace pact yesterday aimed at ending months of ambushes, assassinations and pitched battles along the volatile Afghan border.
The unusual agreement saw the government effectively recognising a force of tribal fighters whose leaders have links to the Taliban or al-Qaida.
Under the deal, the Pakistani army will end its military campaign against the self-declared "Pakistani Taliban" - a loose alliance of tribal militias with strong links to the Afghan Islamist guerrillas - in the North Waziristan tribal agency. In return, the rebels undertake to halt all attacks on the Pakistani army, which have resulted in 350 deaths over the past three years, and prevent cross-border attacks into Afghanistan.

Press secretary to the president of Pakistan tells ABC Osama bin Laden will not be captured if he agrees to live 'peaceful life' here...
Good Wrap Up of the Affair Courtesy of the Commies:
US president calls not to ignore words of Lenin and HitlerSpeaking before US army officers, US president George Bush juxtaposed Osama bin Laden with Vladimir Lenin and Adolph Hitler. He said that underestimating words of “evil and ambitious” people would be “a terrible mistake”. In the speech delivered to the Military Officers Association of America Bush repeatedly quoted Bin Laden and other leaders of Al Qaeda and maintained that ignoring Bin Laden’s words would be just as dangerous as ignoring in the past what Lenin and Hitler said.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani military rebutted information of the US ABC TV Channel that broadcast that Osama bin Laden would not be imprisoned if he agreed to become a law-abiding citizen. The ABC’s commentary is “absurd” and entirely made-up, major general Shaukat Sultan said in an interview to AP.
The ABC’s broadcast also quoted former White House’s counter-terrorism adviser Richard Clark who commented information issued Tuesday on a treaty signed between the Pakistani government and Taliban. Clark argued that the document indicated that the “leaderships of Taliban and Al Qaeda found asylum in Pakistani territory.” Sultan in his interview disproved this assumption.

N.D. senators want U.S. to go after bin LadenWASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad would like to catch terrorist Osama bin Laden.
The North Dakota senators are proposing the federal government spend $20 million to create an intelligence team dedicated to the capture of the chief planner of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The “Bring bin Laden to Justice” amendment would require a classified report to Congress every 90 days on the activities of the government related to capturing bin Laden and other top associates of al-Qaeda.
The senators plan to introduce the proposal today as an amendment to the Defense Appropriation bill being debated on the Senate floor. The Senate is due to vote on the bill before the end of the week.

The bases are routinely attacked at night, Pelton says, and sometimes one is even overrun before the Americans can take it back with air support hours later. He talked to a task force sergeant, who described the incursions:
"We got hit pretty bad two weeks ago," he tells me, adjusting his dirty Jack Daniel's cap. "Six guys in our unit got Purple Hearts. They were waiting for us--knew exactly where we were. . . . The Pakistanis watched the whole thing and did nothing."
He points to a spot a little over a mile away. "They fire rockets right from that hill on the Pak side. We meet with the Pak officials every month on the border. . . . They smile. We smile. They bullshit us and we bullshit them. Then they watch us get attacked without lifting a finger. This place is fucked." I ask him if the men who attacked him were Taliban, Pakistanis, or Arabs. He looks up at me, squints in the sun, and spits again for effect, admitting, "I have no fucking idea who we are fighting."
