Bush says US watching Pakistan deal with militants

WASHINGTON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - A peace deal between Pakistan and pro-Taliban militants does not give "safe haven" to terrorists who may be hiding on tribal lands near the Pakistani-Afghan border, U.S. President George W. Bush said in an interview on Thursday.

"I don't read it that way," Bush said of the agreement Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's government signed on Tuesday in which the militants agreed to stop attacks in the region.

"What he is doing is entering agreements with governors in the regions of the country, in the hopes that there would be an economic vitality, there will be alternatives to violence and terror," Bush said in an ABC News interview.

...

Bush said he did not know all the details of the agreement but added that he would be seeing Musharraf "pretty soon."

Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 01:46 AM by arewenotdemo
Are we sending in Paul Bremer the Third to spread the free market gospel among the heathen Waziris?

Or has Osama complained privately to the Cheerleader about the lack of local accomodations?

:wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

6. Why isnt the main stream press covering this?
They should be questioning why Pakistan is reverting to pre-911 days when it had a cozy relationship with Taliban.

I see it now, he's* okay with it because Osama bin forgotten is now a governor. Whew! I'm glad that's cleared up.

9. As if there is a civil authority in those areas
Oh yeah, the "governors in the region." The only "governor" in that area of the world is the man with the most followers and the biggest weapons who's not shy about using either of them in the most ruthless fashion imaginable. Bush makes it sound like Musharraf is negotiating with Jebby and Goodhair.

10. Exactly, if the truth be told that particular area
is very much like a warlords version of the wild west, the shit would hit the fan. But when they polish the turd by calling these fundimentalist thugs "governors" he* elevates their status.

My feeling is: if pakistan is backing off and wants to make nice with those nuts, why not just tell pakistan, "since you guys are backing off, we are going in".

But that would require so many things like: actually going after osama bin forgotten and taking out those terrorist breeding schools.

On a side note: I read this great book about 3 years ago regarding that region. It's called, "Pakistan: in the shadow of Afghanistan and Islam". Excellent read. Basically spells out how in bed the Saudi's are with the Wahabiests.
