Nancy Reagan objects to campaign ad (by Dem Senate Canidate)
Democratic Senate candidate Jim Webb has a television ad ready to air featuring praise from his late boss Ronald Reagan — and Nancy Reagan called on him Friday to cancel it.

Webb, who was Reagan's Navy secretary before Webb switched to the Democratic Party, uses the ultimate GOP icon to send a sentimental message to conservatives and moderates courted by his opponent, Sen. George Allen (news, bio, voting record). The ad is scheduled to begin airing next week.

But a three-paragraph letter from the former first lady's office said the use of footage of Reagan, who died in 2004, is "neither authorized nor appropriate."...

1. What is inappropriate?
It's not like Webb is lying about his credentials in the Reagan Administration.

When Reagan left the Democratic Party he said the Party had left him. Seems to me The Republican Party has even left the party of Reagan.

Take a good look at what the Repugs have become, Nancy. I don't think even Ronnie would like what is going on now.

28. Comical image of Republicans trying to censor Ronald Reagan!
These people truly have no shame.

The question should be easy: Was Reagan sincere in his praise of Webb? If so, then they have nothing else to say. Finis.

6. Not a problem using Ronnie's funeral now, was it?
But then again, NANCY was on camera a good portion of the time. So all Webb's folks need to do is digitally insert Nancy into the ad. I think one of her in her red suit would look nice.

8. Tough Shit
I love how any Republican can use the word "appropriate" with a straight face. She thinks it was appropriate to keep Ronnie in the WH long ater it was OBVIOUS he was as senile as my 97-year-old grandmother? She thinks it was appropriate to use an astrologist to plan her hubbie's schedule? She can just stuff "appropriate" up her face-lifted ASS.

replaying a 1984 endorsement of raese by ronnie as if it were relevant today. but Nancy didn't seem to mind that one. DOUBLE STANDARD

11. Reagan was a public figure who publicly went on record praising Webb
And that's the end of it. Nancy might be pissed that it wasn't "authorized," but unfortunately, that's her problem. The public record is the public record. The GOP must be truly desperate if this is all they can muster.

18. I think there is some big time hypocrisy here....
I can't imagine this being viewed the same way if it were reversed. A Dem switching to A REP pushing off a letter or video from let's say JFK before he died and before he switched parties. JFK might not have approved of this person after they switched.

Think Joe Lieberman. I have no problem with the family of a dead person saying they'd like to have an endorsement like this removed regardless of party affiliation.

27. Nancy probably doesn't really give a damn.
She probably had someone write this to get the GOP off her back.

I'm not trying to defend the "Reagan Legacy", but she's a frail old woman. A freind of mine worked at Saks in Beverly Hills for a while and she came in when he was working. He said she is a very tiny and looks frail.

I can't see her living on much longer. After dealing with seeing the man she loved die like he did, she probably wants to just live out her life.

The GOP wants any crumb they can get from the Reagan family.

23. Webb's response:
(snip)

Webb stood by the ad while campaigning in Roanoke on Friday night, saying it appropriately uses footage in the public domain and is positive. He said he had not seen the correspondence from Nancy Reagan's office or the joint statement of three former Reagan advisers.

"If Ronald Reagan made any speeches about George Allen, I would imagine George Allen would be wanting to use the footage," Webb said in response to a question about the statements. "I would encourage them to try to go find some."

Webb drew loud applause when he made a similar comment to more than 100 supporters attending a rally at the campaign's downtown Roanoke office.

26. Authorized, schmauthorized...this is public record
Reagan speaking at a public event, as a government representative. That belongs to all of us. She could no more authorize or unauthorize that than she could stop the public dissemination of one of his State of the Union addresses. It belongs to the American people.

Why is the Allen campaign and the RNC trying to censor the words of Ronald Reagan????

29. Well, don't forget, Nancy thinks she can wipe out history
In her mind, she completely erased Reagan's first marriage and children. Her kids didn't even know of the existence Ronnie's children with Jane Wyman until they were quite old, according to Patti.

It's not much of a stretch for her to erase Ronnie's public recognition of Webb's service.

30. I STILL don't understand the love for "the Gypper" millions
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 02:27 PM by ProgressiveEconomist
of voters still evidently feel, though I think Webb is very smart to exploit it.It just doesn't make sense people would hold this lifetime corporate shill in awe--except for those who benefited from his two-thirds cut in the top income tax rate. This giveaway was financed by more than a 25 percent incrrease in payroll taxes on workers at the bottom to middle of the ladder, sold as a way to finance retirement for Boomers. Most of the tens of millions of suckers STILL don't realized Reagan and Greenspan fleeced them, let alone for whose benefit.

EDIT: NOT "two-thirds percent", but two-thirds (sixty-some percent, from 0.70 down to 0.28)

one of Dumbya's appointees switches to Dem. and attempts to use Bush's image to appeal to Republicans? Is Webb comfortable as Democratic candidate or not, thats what I wanna know. I don't understand his constant bringing up Reagan on the campaign trail!!
