NEW YORK -- An out-of-blue cover story in this coming week's New York magazine details for the first time the pressure brought on The New York Times by the Bush administration to hold back on its National Security Agency spying story late last year. By that point, it had already been held for over a year, but 11l days later the Times went ahead with it, and it would win a Puilitzer Prize in the spring.

The cover is mainly a mock front page of the Times with pictures of President Bush and the paper's executive editor, Bill Keller. The banner cover line is "Times Under Siege" and in the deck we learn, "President says editor will have 'blood on his hands.'" Another "story" on the cover about Keller is headlined, "Reluctant Leader Goaded to Fight."

Rachel Sklar, who runs the Eat the Press section of the Huffington Post site, was first to quote from the Joe Hagan story (which should be online Sunday at the New York magazine site) on Sunday morning.

A focus is the Dec. 5, 2005, meeting at the White House, where three top Timesmen -- Keller, Publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr. and Washington bureau chief Phil Taubman -- had been summoned in an attempt to kill or further delay the NSA story....

According to SKlar, Hagan also reports "that joining Bush, Keller, Sulzberger and Taubman were national security adviser Stephen Hadley, Bush lawyer Harriet Miers, and the then-current NSA Director Michael Hayden 'with a thick briefing book in his lap.'"

Sklar writes: "According to Howard Kurtz in WaPo, those meetings were supposed to be off the record; but in the NY Mag story, Keller reveals to Hagan many previously unpublished details of the meeting, including the fact that Bush warned Keller that, if they published the story, the NYT would bear responsibility if there was another attack.

"The basic message," recalls Keller, "was, 'You'll have blood on your hands.'"

8. Wouldn't it stand to reason that if the NY Times withheld publication

for over a year, it has ALSO made OTHER CONCESSIONS and alterations in its publishing in OTHER stories?

To withhold a story for over a year is horrendous. It shows a servile compliance you just don't expect from a major newspaper.

It would be easier to ask if there is any story at all we can believe, just as we read it, from the New York Times.

11. The New York Times hasn't done a damn thing in the last TEN years that

would indicate to me that pressure was required to get them to help out Republicans.
