Dalai Lama presented honorary Canadian citizenship (peace center opening)
International Herald Tribune-

"Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama has been presented with honorary Canadian citizenship, joining only two other people to have received the honour. Canada has previously granted honorary citizenship to South African leader Nelson Mandela and Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who saved Jews from extermination during World War II."

"This is purely educational, not political," he said Thursday.

Among those on the center's advisory board are former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, former Czech Republic president Vaclav Havel and South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Earlier Saturday, the Dalai Lama shared the stage with author Deepak Chopra and others for a dialogue on happiness and stress as determinants of mental health. The Dalai Lama was to meet privately Sunday with leaders from the social and corporate sectors, including senior Massachusetts Institute of Technology lecturer Peter Senge, founding chairman of the Society for Organizational Learning.

3. I find him to be a very unimpressive man
He's actually very conservative. His writings include suggesting that homosexuality, oral sex, sex during the day, and sex not in the missionary position are all forms of "sexual misconduct."

The West has a very 'cuddly' view of him. http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/09/23/1064082990875.html

4. His stance on homosexuality was traditionally conservative but in

recent years he has modified that position.

Buddhism is not monolithic; there are Buddhist monasteries, including at least one in the U.S., where gay men are not prohibited from admission to become bhikkus.

5. A brief excerpt from his Nobel Prize acceptance speech:
“For as long as space endures, and for as long as living beings remain, until then may I, too, abide to dispel the misery of the world.”
