Seven al-Qaeda suspects arrested in Afghanistan (Gulbuddin Hekmatyar)
In an operation launched by Afghan coalition forces in eastern Afghanistan, a known al-Qaeda facilitator and six other suspected al-Qaeda associates were detained, coalition forces said.

The commander of the Hizb-i-Islami militia in Hafezan in the eastern province of Nangarhar, Gulbuddin Hikmatyar, was arrested after credible intelligence led Afghan and coalition forces to his compound, the statement said.

Hikmatyar, the former prime minister of Afghanistan, announced jihad or holy war against what he called the US invasion of Afghanistan four and half years ago and the joint opposition of the Afghan government by Taliban and al-Qaeda in the fight against coalition forces.

4. He is a lamb compared to our pal Rashid Dostum
but old Rashid is too busy with the opium trade to be a bother.

7. You should read up on your pre-2001 Afghanistan history.

Hekmatyar killed 25,000 innocent people by bombarding Kabul in 1994.

He has been an ally of Dostum, the US, and the Taliban at various times.

9. Whose side was he on in 1994?
Dostum, the U.S., or the Taliban. Maybe all three?

10. He and Dostum teamed up in 1994. The Taliban
didn't exist at the time, and the US had abandoned Afghanistan once they had served their purpose.

5. I hope their trial includes proof of Taliban involvement in 9-11, because
there probably isn't any proof of involvement at all and it was indeed an unprovoked invasion.

8. Well, the United Nations disagrees with you on that one.

Considering that the Taliban had been sheltering bin Laden after his bombing of the embassies in 1998.

Now, if you believe that there's no evidence that AQ was involved in 9/11, there's no point in discussing anything with you.

11. I agree with you
This is an excellent opportunity for the evidence linking the Taliban to Al-Queda to 911 to be presented to the world. I look forward to the trial.

6. Sometimes they're suspects, sometimes they're not.
How the hell do they make the distinction?

Did they cross reference their names in the Oracle powered Al-Qaeda database?

Were they caught carring their Al-Qaeda lifetime member cards?

Did they find their job applications in a stack of papers in some house in Kabul?

12. This scumbag was the chief recipient--
--of about $5 billion in your tax dollars in the 80s. (Bin Laden didn't get money--he was invited to the party precisely because he brought his own.

14. Without US and Pakistani support in the 80's
he would have just been another local bandit chieftain. It's what happens when you don't play along. If you take the king's shilling, you do the king's bidding. Saddam and Noriega are two good examples...
