Bush: Set aside differences on terrorism

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent 1 minute ago

WASHINGTON - Five years after the worst attack on U.S. soil,
President Bush said Monday night the war against terrorism is "the calling of our generation" and urged Americans to put aside differences and fight to victory.

"America did not ask for this war, and every American wishes it were over," Bush said in a prime-time address from the Oval Office. "The war is not over — and it will not be over until either we or the extremists emerge victorious."

................

"We are now in the early hours of this struggle between tyranny and freedom," the president said.

As for Iraq, he said Saddam's regime, while lacking weapons of mass destruction, was a threat that posed "a risk the world could not afford to take." At least 2,670 U.S. servicemen and women have died in Iraq, which Bush calls the central front in the war on terror.

"Whatever mistakes have been made in Iraq, the worst mistake would be to think that if we pulled out, the terrorists would leave us alone," the president said. "They will not leave us alone. They will follow us.".........

13. "The safety of America depends on the outcome of the battle in the streets
Terrorism has been a potent political issue for Republicans, and they hope to capitalize on it in the elections. GOP lawmakers are anxious about holding control of both houses of Congress.

Congress has approved $432 billion for Iraq and the war on terrorism.

"The safety of America depends on the outcome of the battle in the streets of Baghdad," the president said. He quoted bin Laden as calling Iraq "the Third World War."

"Our nation has endured trials, and we face a difficult road ahead," the president said. "Winning this war will require the determined efforts of a unified country. So we must put aside our differences and work together to meet the test that history has given us."

15. Putting aside our differences means, Bush continues to stay the
course and fight terrorism in the wrong way, wasting precious American and Iraq lives and costing untold billions of dollars. Putting aside our differences means the Republicans continue to run this country into the ground-further shrink the middle class and making the rich richer. Putting aside our differences means we continue to grow more dependant on oil and need to fight more wars to supply our oil needs, rather than finding alternatives.

24. He's turning a corner....
or I think it's more of a warning to his foes.

Huh? What do I mean?

I think that Bush is merely delivering the following message:

"Hey y'all, as we pass this difficult anniversary with a tough election ahead, why don't all you disagreeable sorts jes dial it back a little? We in the ruling class, Ah mean the Republican White House, are stretched pretty thin, and we can truly feel our pecans a-roasting these days what with the trials, detainees, deaths and all the rest of it. Karl assures us that some Roman general---he says centuries ago, but Ah think Turdblossom's jes bein modest---used this strategy, and it's sure-fire winner, so here goes...
"Phase One is where I enter with tha Olive Branch. It's here that Ah take the good Christian stance and tell you confused libruls to come to Me the peacemaker and quit yer grumbling and revenge fantasies about the Hague. What you gotta do now is just to unentrench y'selves from the high-horses and come into the bosom of ole W's downhome Lovin' Justice. Everybody gives a little and gets a little. Y'all just back off on those legal questions, and we will pass some new bills that'll mean that you're never confronted with Constitutional worries again...leave all that to us.
"And, ah, heh heh, here's the great part of Karl's plan, Phase Too: You Dems STFU now, or we're gonna unleash the reams of scandal stories and shiploads of dirty laundry we have on you until you not only concede but withdraw from the damn elections. All of em.
"Hey, we've got the ears, we've got the eyes, we've got the writers, and we've got the dirt. As Karl is fond of saying, 'Surrender Dorothy.'"
------------

Note: If I could turn the :sarcasm: icon only HALFWAY on, I would. After the past 1/2-dozen years of this GOP monopoly-of-filth, I don't put any sneaky or illegal tactic beyond them.

32. I'll set aside my differences, Mr. Bush, under the following circumstances
You fire Rumsfeld, Rice and everybody else who got us into this mess and replace them with experienced, realistic, non-partisan professionals.

You force Cheney to resign and replace him with someone the American people can have faith in. A moderate Republican who was skeptical about invading Iraq from the getgo would be acceptable but reaching across the aisle for a vice-president would help unite the country that you have so badly divided.

Hey, I have an idea, how about the man you stole the election from in the first place--Al Gore.

You shitcan Karl Rove and the rest of your politcal hatchetmen.

You apologize to the American People for your arrogance and ineptitude and either go to Crawford for a long, long, vacation until the end of your term and allow the new vice president to run the country or better yet, resign outright and allow someone with intelligence, dignity and an understanding of the world beyond slogans lead this nation in this time of crisis.

35. US: Saddam was not responsible for 9/11

http://www.mg.co.za/articlePage.aspx?articleid=283845&area=/breaking_news/breaking_news__international_news/

US: Saddam was not responsible for 9/11

United States President George Bush on Monday night admitted that Saddam Hussein had no hand in the 9/11 terror attacks, but he asked Americans to support a war in Iraq that he said was the defining struggle of our age.

On a day of sorrow and remembrance, beginning with a moment of silence at Ground Zero and ending in a prime time TV address from the Oval Office, Bush tried to steel Americans for the long war ahead against al-Qaeda which he described as an epochal struggle.

...

"I am often asked why we are in Iraq when Saddam Hussein was not responsible for the 9/11 attacks," Bush said. "The answer is that the regime of Saddam Hussein was a clear threat. My administration, the Congress, and the United Nations saw the threat -- and after 9/11, Saddam's regime posed a risk that the world could not afford to take.

"The world is safer because Saddam Hussein is no longer in power."

40. More than moronic--Bush is just a useful tool for now for these sick fucks
First, 9/11 = Saddam
Then, Saddam = Al Qaeda
and then:

Saddam = mushroom cloud

No mushrooms--no WMDs

So...
"The world is safer because Saddam Hussein is no longer in power."
ad nauseum

A war for no other reason other than:
"The world is safer because Saddam Hussein is no longer in power."
ad nauseum

And the comparisons to previous wars and previous US administrations is disgusting; This has been going on for sometime.
"Today we bring you the Franklin Roosevelt WWII and The Harry Truman Cold War as clear representations of who we REALLy are...heh-heh."

Who can say "Uzbekistan", where the largest reserves of untapped oil exist?
Read about it:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all&q=Uzbekistan+oil+reserves

Check out the map:

After Iran will be Turkmenistan. After all, Afghanistan has already been bombed back to the stone age again, and the bigger ricks are now just rubble in being able to lay that golden pipeline down.

If ShrubCo. was no longer in power. The biggest single thing the junta could do in support of world peace is to collectively resign. If they really wanted to atone, some public act of self-abnegation would be nice, but I'd be happy with resignation and exile. Call me softhearted.

39. Damned good question.
The only answer I have is that the Administration realizes that ordinary Americans are so disengaged from the political process that the government can do whatever it likes, tell whatever lies suit its purposes, play whatever games amuse it, wage whatever wars it wants, safe in the knowledge that the rest of us are far more interested in whether America really does have talent or whether celebrities really can dance on ice.

They've given us bread and circuses in abundance, and most of us can't hear anything over the sound of cheering and chewing.

......However, the president brushed aside any idea of an early exit from Iraq, saying a withdrawal of US forces would hand a victory to al-Qaeda.

"Whatever mistakes have been made in Iraq, the worst mistake would be to think that if we pulled out, the terrorists would leave us alone. They will not leave us alone. They will follow us," Bush said.

"If we yield Iraq to men like bin Laden, our enemies will be emboldened ... they will gain a new safe haven ... and they will use Iraq's resources to fuel their extremist movement."

They are the ones who stole elections in order to fraudulently install themselves in office. They are the the ones who lied their way into a war so that their friends could plunder the US Treasury. And they are the ones who will stop at nothing to perpetuate the evil status quo.

And now this asshole wants to kiss and make up!?

I wonder. Would he be so conciliatory if his approval numbers weren't in the toilet and his party is about to lose several seats in the upcoming (s)elections?

This war is just beginning, Bush insists
Geoff Elliott, Washington correspondent
13sep06

DECLARING the world in the "early hours" of a struggle between tyranny and freedom, US President George W. Bush used a prime-time Oval Office address on the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks to try to bolster flagging public support for the war in Iraq.

Closing a day of mourning in the US on the September 11 attacks, Mr Bush told Americans and the world yesterday: "Whatever mistakes have been made in Iraq, the worst mistake would be to think that if we pulled out, the terrorists would leave us alone.

"They will follow us. The safety of America depends on the outcome of the battle in the streets of Baghdad." He added that the war on terrorism was "the calling of our generation".

You're just getting started??? The 9/11 attacks were 5 years ago for crying out loud!

"Whatever mistakes have been made in Iraq..."

You don't even want to acknowledge your mistakes do you because that would mean your god was wrong.

My anger knows no bounds....

67. So now it's a War on Tyranny? Let him start with China and Saudi
Arabia.

He's got Cuba in his sights (the total take-over, and another one-up on Poppy), but he's probably counting on Castro to die before 2008.

70. Sadly, Bush is paranoid and deluded because no one is saying
that the terrorists would leave us alone. His foreign policy is about smashing the opposition and he thinks that if we apply enough force and kill enough people then the terrorist threat will go away. His is the deluded thinking. The terrorists don't hate us for 'our freedoms,' they hate us for our hurtful, self-serving and ignorant foreign policy. The more people we kill, the more terrorists we create. Yeah, that will surely follow us everywhere we go in the world.

This Admin's blind policies of trying to control the Middle East and dictate policy is backfiring, as many people said it would. Now the Bush Admin wants to have a false debate, mostly with itself, over what went wrong and now the Dems or the people who want to consider pulling out are helping the terrorists. This is just more inane and idiotic babbling from and Administration that can't think, can't act and can't plan.

I'm sick of all Our So called Representatives preaching that "We're at War!" I'm not at war. Congress has not declared war.

Take *Your WAR* and stick it where the sun don't shine.

We're NOT at war!

Stop the partisan fear mongering as you whistle past the graveyard. If you want to continue to get your War On, send yourself and the rest of The Congress to the M.E.

Yes, you and the rest of our Political Representative "heroes" show us => personally traipse overseas to kill and die for Oil and The Military Industrial Corporate WAR MACHINE. :grr: :puke: :nuke:

F**k Your Warmongering diatribes!

It's NOT war just because YOU SAY SO. Smoke a joint with a liberal Democrat, share a beer, but BE DAMN SURE to take your sociopathic delusions of an "All Powerful American Empire" elsewhere. :eyes:

Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 08:21 AM by stepnw1f
for a man to force Americans to sacrifice their lives for an illegal war he had started, when we all know this man HAS NEVER SACRIFICED a damn thing in his life, is truly insane.

It just goes to show how inherited wealth and privilege can do to ones ego. This is one reason why I am against wealth being inherited.

84. If there was truly such a threat, no President would boast about it over
and over, incessantly. If there were a real threat, the President would probably not talk much about it to the American people, but only certain occasions, when necessary, and with discretion.

But there is no such threat. It is the power of nightmares.

88. Smile, Smile, Smile, by Wilfred Owen
Head to limp head, the sunk-eyed wounded scanned
Yesterday's Mail; the casualties (typed small)
And (large) Vast Booty from our Latest Haul.
Also, they read of Cheap Homes, not yet planned,
'For', said the paper, 'when this war is done (5)
The men's first instincts will be making homes.
Meanwhile their foremost need is aerodromes,
It being certain war has but begun
.
Peace would do wrong to our undying dead, –
The sons we offered might regret they died (10)
If we got nothing lasting in their stead.
We must be solidly indemnified.
Though all be worthy Victory which all bought,
We rulers sitting in this ancient spot
Would wrong our very selves if we forgot (15)
The greatest glory will be theirs who fought,
Who kept this nation in integrity.'
Nation? – The half-limbed readers did not chafe
But smiled at one another curiously
Like secret men who know their secret safe. (20)
(This is the thing they know and never speak,
That England one by one had fled to France,
Not many elsewhere now, save under France.)
Pictures of these broad smiles appear each week,
And people in whose voice real feeling rings (25)
Say: How they smile! They're happy now, poor things.

90. Juan Cole reporting is not good news for Bush
'A group of lawmakers tried Tuesday to take advantage of the unpopularity of U.S. troops among many Shiite and Sunni legislators to seek approval of a resolution setting a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops _ something the Shiite-dominated government has refused to do.

Sponsored by supporters of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and some Sunni Arabs, the resolution managed to gather 104 signatures in the 275-member parliament before it was effectively shelved by being sent to a committee for review.

That committee will need at least six months to examine the resolution and present its findings to parliament. If it were to be approved, such a resolution would be binding on the government.

"We do not want another kitchen in which decisions are cooked away from the representatives of the people and away from the hearing of the Iraqi people," complained Falah al-Mishaal, the Shiite legislator who presented the resolution. '

102 signatures was enough to get the resolution broached if it is reported back out of committee. Typically a good 80 MPs haven't actually been coming to the sessions, so it is possible that the resolution gained the support of over 50 percent of the members present on the floor. That is, if it had not been sent to committee for review, the resolution could well have just passed on Tuesday. The Iraqi government would be bound by such a majority vote. Apparently the Maliki government has found a parliamentary maneuver allowing it to postpone the resolution for at least 6 months.
