Bush cites 9/11 to win Iraq war support

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 5 minutes ago

WASHINGTON -
President Bush is invoking the memory of Sept. 11 to defend the war in
Iraq, drawing protests from Democrats who say he politicized a national day of mourning.

In a prime-time speech broadcast on Monday's anniversary of the terror attacks, the president described a brutal enemy still determined to kill Americans, perhaps with weapons of mass destruction if they get the chance.

"If we do not defeat these enemies now, we will leave our children to face a Middle East overrun by terrorist states and radical dictators armed with nuclear weapons," Bush said. "We are in a war that will set the course for this new century and determine the destiny of millions across the world."
.........

Bush began with a two-minute tribute to the "nearly 3,000" victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, but most of his 17-minute speech was devoted to justifying his foreign policy since that day. With his party's control of Congress at stake in elections less than two months away, Bush suggested that political opponents who are calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq would be giving victory to the terrorists........

1. No shit.
I did watch the MFer last night, and when he started talking about Iraq, I almost threw a lamp through the TV. I knew he'd do it though; he couldn't just be a decent person, say a few words in commemoration and leave it at that. Had to continue catapulting the propoganda.

2. But no one links Saddam and 911...
Nonetheless the message to the world is terrorists and those in opposition to US hegemony are all the same...

If we don't understand yet, this war wasn't about terrorism, and it wasn't about oil. It was about power. Cheney-Rumsfeld and their Neocon wacko supporters needed a Pearl Harbor to start a "real" shooting war to re-establish the powers of the imperial presidency and reassert US hegemony upon a world that didn't recognize our special position.

Iraq simply seemed convenienty doable. And Iraq had the advantage of being a target rich environment. You just can't get a useful sort of hegemonic propaganda out of video of the bouncing empty mud-brick buildings and desolate mountainsides that you can get by flattening modern high-rise buildings on live feed on CNN.

I cannot believe Bush took advantage of the huge audience viewing The Path to 9/11 to defend his fucked-up, neverending Iraq war. This was a day to mourn those who died, and his self-serving actions are beyond inappropriate.

19. At least he's right.......
(snip)

With his party's control of Congress at stake in elections less than two months away, Bush suggested that political opponents who are calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq would be giving victory to the terrorists.

(paste)

He's right that "victory would be given to the terrorists".

To put that in perspective, Cheney suggested after Connecticut voted for Lamont in the primaries, that most of the populace there were terrorists.

To expand on that: many of them, like most of America, are tired of Lieberman cozying up to Bush and his "success" in the Iraq War.

It can be summerized from all this, that Bush is saying that voting him and his cronies out will be a victory for America -- for US!

I can live with that. :D

7. God damned Yahoo!
They have a habit of changing the headers of their pieces. This morning the header of this piece was, "Bush calls for Unity in War on Terror". I gave it a one star rating. NOW the SOBs change the title to, "Democrats say Bush is politicizing 9/11". Same piece. So now I give it a 5 star rating.

Yahoo does this entirely too often. It's as if they're looking for a specific result in their recommendations and keep changing the header on their stories until they get it. They've been doing this for a long time now and it infuriates me!

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread but I had to get this off of my chest. It pisses me off.

9. WHY DOESN"T BUSH SPEAK ABOUT THE ECONOMY?
it's Iraq, Iran, Iraq, Iran, Al Q, immigration - keeping out Mexicans but no real issues like the economy, healthcare, education?

I'm tired of him using the victims of 9/11's deaths for making political gain!

15. GOP campain 2006, "scare the shit out of you"
It's the Homeland Fear Factor, here to terrify you into voting for them. The Authoritarians want to control all that you see and hear. They can make your world shaky and terrifying or sharpen it to crystal clarity. They will control all that you see and hear, with the commander and chief constantly linking Iraq to 9-11 buy repeating the two in addresses, like last nights part II of "Path to Lies". Don't fall for it people, they're worried they could loose the House & Senate, that's why they're pulling out all their dirty tricks right now. Don't be fooled, it's just their election campaign in action. Here's a link to my cartoon, "Homeland Fear Factor"

17. Pickler is a real hand job anyway
The only thing that will change the current trend will be another terror attack, and the trend gould go either way. It's either Bush failed to protect us or we need a tough talking leader in these times.
Generally speaking, the nation is bushed. Thanks, we've heard enough.

21. Bush's Politics Of Ideology
All well and good, but the overriding problem with this President is beyond politics...he believes the ideology he espouses and that makes his failed policies all the more difficult to address or to alter. It also makes the political calculations for the Democrats all the more complicated. As we see with those involved with al-Qaeda, ideology is virtually impossible to overcome and also a powerful message when delivered by those who sincerely believe the rhetoric is more than politics.

From the Democrats perspective, is it really pertinent whether or not Bush's actions are partisanship or possibly the sincere beliefs held by a man who likes to characterize himself as non-political? In the end, politics is nothing more than the means by which we attempt to elevate, illuminate and impose the views we hold upon a majority of the citizenry. Efforts by Democrats to convince voters that the President is more political and more partisan than themselves is akin to conceding that one's own politics is insufficient to win over a majority of the voting public.

Democrats’ had best move past the rhetoric that seeks to identify the President's partisanship and onto the rhetoric of elucidating their own politics. If they continue to only ask voters to reject the partisanship of the President, and therefore his politics, the voters may well accept the oft heard assertions that Democrats are attempting to discern the will of the voters in order to define the ideology that the Democratic Party embraces. That strategy can often fail to defeat a sincerely held ideology...even if the opponents ideology is wholly suspect. Democrats would be better served to stand for anything rather than to simply stand in opposition ...and that needs to happen sooner than later.

22. How can wanting to leave in three years
be helping terrorists when the initial plan called for no more than SIX MONTHS?

I wish someone in the supposedly 'liberal media' would ask *Bush and Rumsfeld THAT particular question. Are you lying now? Or were you lying then?

23. the MOMENT they said 'it won't be political' it became clear
what to expect, and bush delivered alright. a completely political pro-war speech that told the american public that not only did 911 justify both afghanistan and iraq, but that a LONG war to control the oil, i mean to spread freedom, in the entire middle east should be expected. people should be appalled at the politicization of 911.
