2. House passes bill to authorize election-year stunt.
This one will be just like the gay marriage debacle they caused during the last election. They'll stick themselves on the cross over it, and then pull themselves down and hide it under the rug once the voting booths are closed.

3. If it is an "election-year stunt", then it will never get built...as soon
as the election is over this will be another forgotten one of their projects...

4. While in Thailand I saw a farmer barefoot climb over a 15 ft fence
and three strands of barb-wire in less than 15 seconds. This is a massive waste of money.

8. But isnt the border 2000 miles long, or more?
700 is a start, they just better make sure that when the wall is done the workers are finishing it from the Mexico side.

21. The Wall Street wing (pun intended) of the GOP loves cheap docile
Edited on Thu Sep-14-06 11:48 PM by ProgressiveEconomist
immigrant labor way too much IMO for the party to take steps that WOULD slow undocumented immigration, such as steep fines then jail terms for rogue employers. The wall is pure red meat for the "social issues" racialist wing of the party, to which the Wall Street wing throws scapegoats every other September.

10. Mexicans buy wirecutters. Practice polevaulting.
Or, more likely, our farmers will cut the wires themselves.

Patrol 700 miles of fence? THIS administration?

14. Didn't they learn anything from the Berlin Wall?
The East Germans spent billions of dollars on the Berlin Wall, and people still found ways to escape. Putting up a ramshackle fence along the border isn't going to solve a damned thing. Except maybe making their base feel better, pandering to the racists.

15. Build a 50 foot wall, they'll bring a 51 foot ladder
This is not an immigration problem folks, it's a poverty problem. The right way is to either force the Mexican government to work for all its people or let their poor masses into the U.S. like we did during the days of Ellis Island. As long as people can go from $5 per day in Latin America to $100 in the US, they're going to come. And they're going to risk everything - including their lives - to do it.

We shouldn't thwart them, we should welcome and respect them. Should they choose to become citizens, they can vote and run for office. If they don't, they can still contribute by paying taxes and being subject to our laws.

18. To paraphrase Robert Frost, "Bad fences make bad neighbors"
This new outrage is an example of the ugly behavior that has made Dubya's America an international outcast. One by one Dubya and his Congress have insulted every friend but Britain. A country with so many enemies needs to make new friends, not insult old ones.

Compare what Cuba is doing: Free cataract and other eye surgery in poor nations in Latin America, Asia and Africa. Meanwhile, we're building the world's largest spite fence.
