NYPD Reverses Decision, Grants Sept. 19 Antiwar March Permit
Edited on Fri Sep-15-06 12:53 PM by Tace
KATHLYN STONE -- World News Trust

The New York City Police Department has changed its mind and agreed to issue a permit for a march and demonstration Sept. 19 protesting President Bush's address to the United National General Assembly that day, a spokeswoman for the antiwar group United for Peace & Justice said Friday.

The NYPD this week denied the country’s largest peace organization a permit to march anywhere near the United Nations while Bush addresses the General Assembly.

In a departure from earlier national peace marches, UFP&J was going to organize the march without a permit in a mass act of civil disobedience, UFP&J spokeswoman Jessica McCoy said. UFP&J represents more than 1,400 anti-war groups.

UFP&J decided Thursday to go forward with the march to show its commitment to ending the war. “Fortunately, we’ll not need to go that route,” McCoy said. “There’s a lot of support for us out there.” Plans are for marchers to gather on 6th Ave. at 11 a.m. and march up to 47th Street.

1. Well, this is still America. Although sometimes it seems so in name only.
With our civil rights and liberties eroding by the minute, it's nice to see that some are still somewhat intact.

My thanks and admiration to all who participate in the march. I wish I could be there to march with you.

3. I Feel A Lot Better Marching With A Permit
That's scary enough, IMHO, plus -- I don't have bail money. : )

of people wasn't going to be a good use of their resources. Better to let it go on and just arrest the odd handful of protestors that will choose to act up beyond the confines of the regular laws on the book.

11. You mean Air Force Secretary Wynne?

Air Force chief: Test weapons on testy U.S. mobs

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nonlethal weapons such as high-power microwave devices should be used on American citizens in crowd-control situations before being used on the battlefield, the Air Force secretary said Tuesday.

The object is basically public relations. Domestic use would make it easier to avoid questions from others about possible safety considerations, said Secretary Michael Wynne.

"If we're not willing to use it here against our fellow citizens, then we should not be willing to use it in a wartime situation," said Wynne. "(Because) if I hit somebody with a nonlethal weapon and they claim that it injured them in a way that was not intended, I think that I would be vilified in the world press."

The Air Force has paid for research into nonlethal weapons, but he said the service is unlikely to spend more money on development until injury problems are reviewed by medical experts and resolved.

I've been across lots of barricades and don't mind 'em one bit. I may not agree with UPJ's agenda, but I'll meet and march with any other DUer who appreciates our civilized lifestyle.

25. On 2nd thought, this Sunday's event has multiple sponsors
"Number the Dead" demonstration has two objectives: To illustrate - and draw awareness - to the significant number of US soldiers and Iraqis whose lives have been lost as a result of the war in Iraq. To honor that reality with a moment of silence for the US soldiers and Iraqis who have fallen in the name of freedom. On September 17, 2006, we are organizing roughly 2700 people to stand on the east sidewalk of 5th Avenue, from 8th Street to 98th Street at 10AM. The number of participants will correspond to the number of US soldiers that have died in Iraq. Each person will hold a poster board with the name, age and hometown of every fallen US soldier written on it. In addition, we will have someone holding a poster board on each block, marking the number of Iraqis who have been killed as a result of this war. Each block will represent 1,000 Iraqis. From 10-11AM we will stand together in a silent demonstration and vigil.

**We have a permit.
