Michigan: Granholm, Stabenow Increase Leads

GRAND RAPIDS -- The latest EPIC-MRA poll, released just 54 days before the November 7 general election, shows statewide incumbents are holding the lead.

The poll, exclusive to 24 Hour News 8 and our media partners, sampled 600 people between September 7 -12, and includes a margin of error of 4 percent.

Governor Jennifer Granholm holds an 8-point lead, 50-42, over Republican nominee Dick DeVos. It's the second consecutive poll Granholm has held a lead bigger than margin of error. In the previous poll, Granholm led 49-42.

In the race for the US Senate, incumbent Debbie Stabenow has opened a 19-point lead, 53-34, over GOP candidate Mike Bouchard.

talking about DeVos shipping Michigan jobs to China for cheap labor has been particularly effective. That will raise the ire of Michiganians.

But Granholm needs another one just as effective to show what she has done and will do.

3. There was a hysterically funny LTTE about DeVos:

in our local paper. It was short and sweet. "The secret is known. Soylent Green is people. DeVos IS ScAmway."
Very few people in Michigan like Amway, and tying DeVos to his company had HURT him.

4. Devos scares me, Bouchard doesn't

With Stabenow and Bouchard, I think the voters like both and figure they'll leave her in because she's doing a good job. I hope they both continue to run positive campaigns and neither sinks to negative ads.

The Amway connection does hurt Devos. Everyone in Michigan knows it's a scam. Amway is running their own ads now about what a wonderful company it is to work for. It ends with a guy saying something to the effect of "Amway, it's where I work. You got a problem with that?" I think it's the kind of ad that the general public is annoyed by, and realizes it's only on because the company's head is running for public office.

Plus, Devos has been caught up in his own lies about business in China. I would go so far as to say that as a self-professing evangelical christian, he shouldn't be investing any money in a country that treats christians as badly as China does. It may be legal to do so, but it's not very christian.
