Drought measure rejected

BY JOSEPH MORTON

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., was unsuccessful this week in his attempt to get approval of drought aid by attaching it to the port security bill.

The Republican leadership blocked the amendment, saying it was not relevant to the legislation.

Nelson spokesman David DiMartino said the Senate has been passing measures by attaching them to other bills for 200 years. He said there was plenty of time for Republicans to bring up the amendment and vote on it.

1. "Not relevant to the legislation"....
Spoken by the Kings of Pork, this can only mean one (or more?) of three things:

1. We don't give a rat's tail about no dirt farmers unless they are rich enough to buy water regardless of a drought;

2. The farmers affected by the drought are too poor and/or too uninfluential to be worth our time;

3. We plan to use the drought to drive the little guys out of business because ConAgra and other mega consortiums have given us a shitload of money for help in buying the last few independent farms in the country.

3. What a Disappointment This Guy Is
Maybe this finger in Nelson's eye by his right wing buddies will drive him to vote on the dem's side once or twice in the future. Hell, who am I kidding?

4. Introduce it as an actual bill, let the Repugs veto it, THEN the
Dem's will have something to scream about and take to the bloggers and then the MSM. (Though, with all the riders attached to bills, the response pot=kettle.)

Dem's need to quit playing like the repugs and change the rules of the game!
