Iranian president claims US is the nuclear threat
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed Friday the United States was the real nuclear threat and reiterated his insistence Tehran's nuclear atomic program had peaceful aims.

"Why should people live under the nuclear threat of the United States?" he asked at a summit of the 118-strong Non-Aligned Movement in Havana.

"What is the UN Security Council waiting for to react to those threats?"

He said that for decades the Council had failed to protect the rights of the Palestinian people, and had done nothing for 30 days to end the recent Israeli "aggression" on Lebanon.

8. another point about nukes
We're developing nuclear artilary "mini nukes" that can be used as bunker busters. I'm sure that wouldn't be too bad if we just used a sh*t load of smaller nukes.

16. What do you mean "going to?"
Hiroshima. Nagasaki. For all we know, "tactical nuke" bunkerbusters at Tora Bora. Not to mention depleted uranium, which certainly amounts to irradiating the hell out of people.

And yes, there has been widespread speculation about a 1st strike on Iran. You can damwell bet people like Kristol, Wolfowitz & Rummy have contemplated it.

17. Get a grip
no tactical weapons were used. Nuclear weapons leave undeniable fingerprints. Double flash visible from space, seismic activity, and fallout. People would notice that. That assertion is well outside the realm of the possible.

DU is not a gamma emitter. I handled it in the NG. Just didn't eat any. It was used in bosnia by us before I went and the WHO concluded there were no effects.

Of course we plan nuclear strikes. We have since 1945. However we have not carried out any.

This guy is a loud mouth ass.

19. Google DU and birth defects sometime.
I know we used it in Bosnia, as well as in GW I.

Also, small tactical weapons would not necessarily be that easy to detect. There are all sorts of seismic eventa all the time. And how many countries have full-time satellite coverage of Afghanistan? US intelligence isn't likely to be reporting on US illegal activities, after all.

20. How bout you get one? By actually reading about DU
It's an alpha emitter. When it gets aerosolized and breathed in, it emits alpha particles whereever it goes in the body FOREVER. Why not read a Ph.D. level epidemiologist rather than believe what you were told by your officers?

"When used in war, the DU bursts into flame from the impact when it hits a target. It can pierce tanks and armoured cars, releasing inside of them a deadly radioactive aerosol of uranium, unlike anything seen before. It can kill everyone in a tank. This ceramic aerosol is much lighter than uranium dust. It can travel in air tens of kilometres from the point of release, or be stirred up in dust and resuspended in air with wind or human movement. It is very small and can be breathed in by anyone: a baby, pregnant woman, the elderly, the sick. This radioactive ceramic can stay deep in the lungs for years, irradiating the tissue with powerful alpha particles within about a 30 micron sphere, causing emphysema and/or fibrosis. The ceramic can also be swallowed and do damage to the gastro-intestinal tract. In time, it penetrates the lung tissue and enters into the blood stream. It can be stored in liver, kidney, bone or other tissues, again for years, irradiating all of the delicate tissues located near its storage place. It can effect the blood, which is the basis of our immune system, and do damage to the renal system as it is eventually excreted in the urine. It can also initiate cancer or promote cancers which have been initiated by other cancinogens."--Rosalie Bartell Ph.D.

Why not read about Doug Rokke, the guy the army put in charge of DU cleanups?

"Burning tanks, burning oil fields, charred bodies.

This was Kuwait after the Gulf War. Rokke had a mission-clean up U.S. tanks contaminated with DU.

What Rokke found terrified him.

Oh my God is the only way to describe it, Rokke said. Contamination was all over.

Rokke and his crew were measuring significant levels of radiation up to 50 meters away from affected tanks: up to 300 millirems an hour in beta and gamma radiation, and alpha radiation from the thousands to the millions in counts per minute (CPM) on a Geiger counter.

That whole area is still trashed, he said. It's hotter than heck over there still. This stuff doesn't go away.

His team took three months to clean up 24 tanks for transport back to the U.S.

The Army, Rokke said, took another three years to fully decontaminate the same 24 tanks.

But the contaminated tanks weren't the only problem.

Within 72 hours of their inspections, Rokke and his crew started getting sick.

But they continued with their work. They went back to the U.S. to perform tests on Army bases. They deliberately blew up tanks with DU rounds, then ran over and jumped on the tanks while they were still burning. They videotaped the uranium-oxide clouds pouring out, and they measured the radiation being thrown off.

In the past decade, Rokke said 30 men out of 100 who were closely involved in these operations dropped dead."

Forgive me if I seem a bit dissatisfied with your explanation of why DU is perfectly safe, except for seasoning your vegetables.

29. I'm glad you saw that post before I did.
My response would not have been quite as polite.

Those who carry water for the neo-fascists by claiming "depleted uranium" is perfectly safe, are beneath contempt in my opinion. Ignorance is no excuse for making such statements, as there is plenty of information about DU that is readily available to anyone who is interested.

Thanks for your links.

think is the biggest nuclear proliferator on the planet Earth? Why don't you tell us who is passing out nuclear technology like it's candy?

Why don't you tell us who's been doing that for decades?

26. To read a really good summary with time table of Iran and nuke stuff
http://www.monde-diplomatique.fr/dossiers/iran/

It is in French, but what is basicly says is that from 1970 thru the Revolution, the Iranians were backed by the West and started construction of reactors. Then they stopped for a long time after sanctions. Then began again to enrich their own fuel. But there was a lot of hanky panky going on caught by the IAEA and they got their peepees whacked, then more hanky panky, more wet noodles, etc. The dossier ends on 8 August 2005, when it was published.

8 août 2005
Une crise internationale en gestation
"L’Iran relance la production d’uranium enrichi" is the title of the article. (Iran relaunches the production of enriched Uranium in English)

My own notes on the article are: "L'Iran, le vrai cible vers un nouveau pays en puissance armement nucleaire ou la revenche simple ou une guerre de mots ou une demonstaration de l'echec des politiques militaraires americaines en l'Irak?" in English: Iran, true target of a new possible nuclear-armed nation? -- or simple revenge? -- or a demonstration of failure in America's Iraq policies? when analyzing the earlier sword-rattling in 2005. And that is still how I see it: Iran either is aiming to produce a bomb, the US is still sore over the Shah and the large number of nonvoluntary "guests" of the US Embassy's welcoming committee, or else is the sabre rattling a demonstration of the failure of the US policy, and out of bitterness at the oil not flowing as freely as the roses at our soldiers feet, seeks a new bogeyman (not that I ever believed that the BS Ari Cohen dreampt up about either one of the oil or roses stuff anyhow).

But that only addresses the US/West v. Iran position, on the flipside, they really are trying to get 2 or 3 reactors going for power, as they don't think the tap will flow forever. They were supposed to have begun enriching their own under a Franco-Iranian agreement using their U and France's tech in a deal that gave enriched U to both for power reactor fuel under the Shah, but that fell thru...
But why so secretative about it? The IAEA caught them time and time again as le Monde Dip. reports enriching and not telling anyone...It isn't illegal or out of the ordinary to enrich U, even Brazil can and is doing it themselves now, and no one bats an eye...
