Bush 'prepares emissions U-turn' (to reduce impact of Gore's Mon. speech)
http://news.independent.co.uk/environment/article1604092.ece

(snip)

After years of trying to sabotage agreements to tackle climate change he is drawing up plans to control emissions of carbon dioxide and rapidly boost the use of renewable energy sources.

Administration insiders privately refer to the planned volte-face as Mr Bush's "Nixon goes to China moment", recalling how the former president amazed the world after years of refusing to deal with its Communist regime. Hardline global warming sceptics, however, are already publicly attacking the plans.

(snip)

Over the past few days rumours swept the capital that the "Toxic Texan" would announce his conversion this week, in an attempt to reduce the impact of a major speech tomorrow by Al Gore on solutions to climate change.

anyone being fooled by this.

Though of course, unfortunately Gore's speech won't receive much coverage anyways by the media...

4. The Toxic Texan pretty much sums it up. And as to the article,
I do not agree that Gore did little on the environment while he was in office. He and Clinton did many important things as fighting the logging companies, saving not only the spotted owl but also the old growth forests. In addition, Gore is serious not wooden; leading is and should be a serious business. Only when an escapee from some pod becomes prezelident do important issues become a joke. I do NOT know about you, but I want a president who can think on his feet, considers policies not politics, and yes, even reads and speaks with presence of mind and clarity and even passion and eloquence. Mr Independent if you have not heard Al Gore's speeches the past 2 or 3 years you have really missed an opportunity to appreciate a great American and a great member of the earth's inhabitants.

5. So what?
Edited on Sat Sep-16-06 09:26 PM by RestoreGore
This article, if it is even true, already revealed why he might do this. He has NO MORAL COMPASS, so why anyone would give a damn if he does it or not at this point after he has done all in his power to contribute to the crisis, makes me wonder about them at this point. The man is a damned WAR CRIMINAL that should be impeached, and you think this is news? You think we should be HAPPY that this illegal president is once again going to bring something out that won't be adhered to only to cover his ass in an election year? Are you going to send him a thank you note? I think I'm going to puke. And once again we see how this issue is merely being used as a political football and a "contest". But I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Instead of solutions and action, all we get is BS.

8. I'll believe it when I see it.
This will probably be like "Clear Skies" and "Healthy Forests" both of which were the exact opposite of their names.

<only half joking>
He'll control carbon dioxide by reducing the amount of wildlife (which breathes out CO2).

The renewable energy sources will be ethanol, nuclear breeder reactors, hydro from rising sea levels, and whatever the hell Halliburton can somehow twist to sort of fit the definition of "renewable". And maybe some $3 an hour immigrants farting on windmills.
</only half joking>

24. "see, the carbon dioxide will result in more bountiful ethanol production"
I fear you are right -- he will mouth enough platitudes to try to snatch the global warming issue from the Democrats -- and worse than doing nothing, he will use it to justify other things he wants to do.

So Dubya indulges quite a bit of it. Actions, however, are much harder to come by with this corrupt administration.

12. Be cynical if you must, but ya' gotta call this a win.
Even if the follow through is less than ideal, the acceptance of the CONCEPT takes the argument away from many who repeat the BS because they have been told to.

And for the others, it just separates them from the administration one more step. THEY now become the extremist fringe.

21. The Mother Of All Greenwash
After 5.5 years of unmitigated BULLSHIT from this clown and his ship of fools government, we are supposed to believe that he all of a sudden woke up with big red toothmarks from science and reality on his ass, and NOW he's going to unveil some dynamic new program.

Horseshit.

Bottom line - when it's on the cover of The Economist, then it's Beltway Fact. And when it's Beltway Fact (which has little to nothing to do with the reality you and I and everybody we are likely to meet encounter on a daily basis) then sure as the sun rises in the east, a president has to stand up and speechify about it.

Dollars to donuts this is just one more Bush Earth Day photo-op pile of steaming bullshit, replete with references with hydrogen (which ain't going to happen), "energy independence" (which also ain't going to happen) and conservation/efficiency (which is going to be seriously endorsed by this administration at around the same time vegans start hanging out at National Cattlemens' Conventions, asking for autographs).

Nauseating, predictable election-year bullshit, which will be promptly forgotten until late next April, when Chimpy will follow up with the obligatory photo of him standing next to a tree, or perhaps a body of water.

:puke:

Yep, we're all over THAT one, mmhmm.

Any asshat can set goals and make up plans. The trick is actually doing something about those plans instead of giving them in a no-bid contract to your rich buddies who proceed to take taxpayer money to sit on their laurels.

"The very fact that Bush would reverse his position will liberate many Republicans to vote for meaningful pollution cuts," says Phil Clapp, president of the National Environmental Trust.

got a chuckle out the snippet above... so instead of rubber-stamping NO on meaningful pollution cuts, the GOPers are now allowed to rubber-stamp it YES?
