Gore's 2008 Plans May Become Clearer After Release of Book (New Gore book)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/16/AR2006091600877.html

By John F. Harris and Shailagh Murray
Sunday, September 17, 2006; Page A07

Although saying he has no plans to run for president in 2008, former vice president Al Gore has nonetheless left the door ever so slightly ajar. It's a good bet that door will swing open a good bit wider come next May.

That is when Gore is scheduled to publish his next book. With no fanfare, he signed a few weeks ago with Penguin Press to write "The Assault on Reason."

As described by editor Scott Moyers, the book is a meditation on how "the public arena has grown more hostile to reason," and how solving problems such as global warming is impeded by a political culture with a pervasive "unwillingness to let facts drive decisions."

While that may sound abstract, both the subject matter and the timing of the release have an unmistakable subtext. In 2004, Gore cheered liberals when he lashed at President Bush for allegedly falling captive to right-wing special interests and taking flight from "fact-based analysis." If the book strikes a chord, it will produce new momentum for Gore to make another bid for the White House, presumably fueled in large part by anti-Iraq-war Democrats.

5. If he runs he should win.
Not should in a sense of right and wrong should, but should as in every one will vote for him.

6. Here's how the plan will work:
1. We persuade Al to run.

2. We support Al to the hilt.

3. Al wins the election.

4. We immediately start calling him a whore, a liar, a murderer, and a traitor. We call him "Algore".

5. After he's facing impeachment for throwing away a paper clip without Congressional authorization ("Algore has destroyed the Environment! The shame!"), we repeat that "he's the best Republican president we've ever had".

6. We weep bitter tears when Rick Santorum is sworn in as President in 2012.

We did it with Clinton, we can do it with Gore!

... OR, we could actually do things right this time.

8. Maybe . . .
. . . maybe not. This may very well turn into a reason vs. faith issue. The whole faith-based vs. reality based concept is already pretty pervasive.

9. How Disingenuous To Mr. Gore
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 09:35 AM by RestoreGore
To keep trying to intimate that everything he does is only part of some methodical clandestine plan to run in the very system he himself stated was "toxic" is in my opinion very disingenuous to the man. Perhaps he is writing these books because he truly has a concern for where this country and world is heading. Of course, websites that only wish to pitch themselves will always go along with the media hype, speculation, and soundbites they claim to abhor in order to sell themselves. And it really is also a pity that the ONLY way this book will even sell is if this "will he or won't he" prognostication is attached to it. In my view it actually speaks volumes about people who will only go see a movie or buy a book because there is political speculative hype attached to it and not based on the merits of it. But hey, I'll play along and say that yes, once Mr. Gore gets done skewering the political system so many still want him to have to endure in this book, his intentions will be very clear. And I am sure people in the millions will run out to buy this book as they did Joined At The Heart, because they actually cared about what he wrote about... oh wait, he wasn't running in 2004 either, which is probably why no one even mentions that good book at all. Again, that is just sad.

17. Nice cop out
The truth is however, that from what I have seen some only care about this man if they can use what he is doing to hype up something political or for personal gain, and again, I find that to be disingenuous to him. And using THAT logic I certainly can compare those two books based on the times of their writing.

19. What cop out? The book you mentioned is co-authored by Tipper and is
about family. The followup was a book of photographs.

That and Gore's upcoming book can't be compared in terms of content or sales by any stretch of the imagination. And doing so is outrageously disingenuous.

10. But...is it possible that May will be a bit too late to start?
I'm all ears as to why it would be ok to wait that long to announce (I think the longer the better, but...); but I'm wondering if he will not possibly be forced to announce sooner because of strong possible supporters (maybe monetary, def. political) will be pledged elsewhere come the spring. Opinions? I don't know much about this stuff.

14. I think it is too late, also
Unless he starts raising money right after November and then announces in May. I want him to run but I do think all of them have to decide very soon.

16. Well now...
I DO think he's a bit Ross Perot-ish in that he does not NEED a whole hunk of his money to be raised, although I'm sure he would be grateful not to have to spend his own. To me, that's part of his appeal, is that he does not need the money so bad that he can be bought by anyone. I love it.
I guess we'll have to wait and see on this one....I am so very excited for the possibilities.

18. "Forced" To Announce?
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 06:46 PM by RestoreGore
Why? He is a private citizen now doing something very important for our world. Why is it that suddenly that is not good enough for so many people? Especially some people who didn't seem to be too heartbroken he didn't run in 2004 when it was even MORE urgent for us to not only fight the global warming crisis, but to also stop Bush? He also doesn't have to do anything now, but he is out here giving of himself every day for a cause he sincerely believes in. For me, that is more than enough, and again, he is a wise and prescient man following his own path now, and it is the right one. "Forcing" him to do anything is actually imo arrogant.

20. And for the acid tongued Rove, neutralize with this
Edited on Mon Sep-18-06 12:50 AM by caligirl

Abramoff couldn't have corrupted more than half of congress without Rove's blessing.

Gore deserves a try at the WH one more time. Rove needs to be silenced, Abramoff and the prosecuters can do that handily.

22. Al Gore To Follow Up 'Inconvenient Truth With 'Assault on Reason'
http://bookstandard.com/bookstandard/news/author/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003123568
Former presidential candidate and vice president Al Gore has recently signed a deal for his next book, the Washington Post reported yesterday. The Assault on Reason is expected to be published in May from Penguin Press.

According to editor Scott Moyers, the book is about how "the public arena has grown more hostile to reason," and how society's "unwillingness to let facts drive decisions" impedes problem-solving in political and environmental concerns, the Post reported.

24. This sounds great!
I hope they sell by the millions. Unlike the conservative idiots Al's book sale totals won't have the asterisks that denote the bulk purchasing the wingers do to be "bestsellers".
