Ricketts, Nelson now tougher on immigration
BY ROBYNN TYSVER

In this election year, illegal immigration has become the political hot button that crime was a decade ago - politicians can't be tough enough on the issue.
They also can't say the words "border security" often enough.
In Nebraska's U.S. Senate race, the positions of both Republican Pete Ricketts and Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson have evolved over time, with both candidates taking tougher stances.
Nelson opposed a crackdown on illegal workers at Nebraska's meatpacking plants in 1998-99 because, he said, it was draining needed labor from the state. Now, he says illegal immigrants are taking jobs from Americans and lowering wages. He is calling for a wall along the nation's southern border.
