Rasmussen: Bush Bounce Is Over

Rasmussen Reports - September 17, 2006

The latest Bush bounce is over. Today, 41% of American adults approve of
the way that President Bush is performing his job and 57% disapprove. That's
exactly where the numbers were before the President's 9/11 speech.

Overall 21% of Americans Strongly Approve and 42% Strongly Disapprove.

Ever notice that Bush's Rasmussen numbers go up when we're between major
polls, but when the likes of Gallup or Ipsos are released Rasmussen adjusts?

They do skew to the right, but I'd call that skew "slight" compared to Mason-Dixon, Gallup, or Strategic Vision. Now those guys know how to make a rightward skew....

5. Yep. Rasmussen skews Republican. They seem to be fearful of

upsetting the Republican majority.

Bush's numbers aren't that high, I don't believe. I think people all over the place know he's a fool, and very possibly a dangerous fool.

If Bush is asking for clearance to torture "terrorists," then even the thickest Bush voter out there in Red land must realize at some point that that means pert near anybody on the globe can torture Billy Ray and Mary Sue.

So they look at what Bush's war has begot, and I don't think they see much to defend.

Many Bush voters will stay home on Nov. 7th, and some will bolt to our side.

The trends look blue, and Bush is to blame for that.

6. And for that matter, the Bush presidency is over. We keep hearing

that The Fixer, Jim Baker, is going to negotiate some sort of resolution with Iraq.

Maybe he has the cards to play on that one and maybe he doesn't.

I don't think the insurgents give a hoot in hell for Jim Baker.

So absent a concocted arrangement that Baker miraculously pulls out of the fire, it doesn't look very much as if Iraq is going to work for the Republicans in November -- or in 08 either -- and Afghanistan is unravelling even as we speak.

The economy is flimsy at best, and the closer someone looks the worse it is, and as late as this past week, Dubya was blathering about how "strong" the economy is and credited his tax cuts.

I don't think out-of-work people with 2 or 3 children believe the economy is strong. In that group, I'm not seeing a surge of Republican votes.

And there's the matter of torture. I would hope to hear from U.S. clergy in the coming weeks roundly and vehemently condemning the President for his request to torture human beings. Their voices must be raised in opposition to that kind of tyranny, that kind of violence.

Senators Collins, McCain, Warner and Graham signalled to the Fake Cowboy this past week that he isn't going to get his way on torture, and for that matter, the next two years of his term are not going to be a cakewalk.

are not giving him any backwind or push. Very rough going for a lame duck who can't break 41% approval ratings as "a war president."

30. I'd love to see clergy speak out on the torture issue too. But

the IRS' leaning hard on a Pasadena church for having the audacity to deliver an anti-war sermon before the '04 election is, I think, meant in part to show that ANY level of dissent among the faith community carries severe risks.

33. Yes -- I agree that was likely the motive for the audit/pressure, but

an ecumenical council of heavy-duty folks coupled with a series of regional public conferences would be much more effective than the media in getting the word out.

Bush's foreign policy is inexcusable generally and on torture specifically. A chorus of spiritual leaders would help drive the point home.

He never had any "comeback" or "second wind". He's been through....for a long time and he knows it.

I'm just wondering why we are so addicted (or vulnerable) to these "trend" type situations where someone is down in the dumps, then suddenly they make a REMARKABLE COMEBACK. I've seen this ever since Bush stepped into the White House. He's down, and then he's up. He behaves like an ass, but in 2 weeks his numbers go up. It's all bull shit.

It's a Smoke and Mirror technique. Don't fall for it.

But the reason why Bush's job approval is always higher in his poll, is because he asks questions that invite nuance. Instead of the usual "do you approve/disapprove" he gives four options for that: "strongly approve," "somewhat approve," "strongly disapprove," and "somewhat disapprove." I'd wager that some of the people in the other polls who say "disapprove" are saying "somewhat approve" in Rasmussen. It's likely his base that's doing this.

I think they measure day-to-day changes, and those are not particularly meaningful. But they are useful for measuring the effects of certain strategies. After a few days, the cons wear off, but I imagine Rasmussen has been early in recognizing which authentic strategies are getting traction out there.
