Text Message Saves Kidnapped Girl
Suspect Arrested After 14-Year-Old In Bunker Sends Message To Mom

LUGOFF, S.C., Sept. 17, 2006

(AP) Authorities early Sunday arrested a man suspected of kidnapping a 14-year-old girl who sent a text message to her mother that led to her rescue from a booby-trapped bunker.

Investigators arrested Vinson Filyaw, 37, in Richland County about 24 hours after rescuing Elizabeth Shoaf, Steve McCaskill, the sheriff in neighboring Kershaw County.

Filyaw will be charged with kidnapping, possession of an incendiary device and impersonating an officer, he said.

nvestigators arrested 37-year-old Vinson Filyaw, right, for allegedly kidnapping 14-year-old Elizabeth Shoaf. The girl sent a text message to her mother's cell phone which led police to the bunker where she was found Saturday in a wooded area near her home. (CBS/AP)

McCaskill said more charges likely will follow after investigators interview the girl. Police expected to talk to her Monday about the Sept. 6 abduction and ordeal that followed, he said.

3. If he is the guilty party I hope they lock him away for a long long time,
if not for the rest of his natural life.

However, I sincerely wish America would stop condoning rape in our penal systems.

Only people who condone rape actually condone rape.

Rape is evil. Condoning rape is evil.

10. Any other parts of the Constitution you wish to deny today. . .
or is the Eighth Amendment's proscriptions against cruel and unusual punishment sufficient to the moment?

13. Cruel yes. Unusual no.
Otherwise, we would not be discussing it.

You got issues with constitutional guarantees, take them up with King George first.

Then we'll talk.

19. Show me the civilized land where rape is codified as a punishment. . .
While you're at it, show me where you get the idea our Constitution isn't -- first and foremost -- the primary responsibility of We, the People.

Ah but it's just so easy to close our minds and wallow in visions of cruel justice and petty vindictiveness, all the while sanctimoniously decrying the terrible mess that others have made of the world, confident in our own unexplored hearts that we act from motives pure and chaste and, if only properly understood, free of foolish guilt or social stigma. With us or against, we dismiss nuance and centuries of heritage with an airy, "We'll just have to disagree," and a cheery "Take it up with the other guy, who's far worse than me." Ah, how freeing to be without...

That guy is a rough 37.

I'm glad the girl is ok and kudos to her for finding a way to save herself under that kind of pressure.

9. I talked with my daughter about things like this when she was 13.
I told her to never let anyone forcefully get her into a car to take her somewhere, that if she has to make her last stand to make it out in the open where people can see and hear. I told her to keep her wits about her and to keep her head straight in a tight spot. I told her that she should know and remember in her heart that if she is ever in that kind of situation where she is alone and helpless that those who love her have not forgotten her, that we are thinking of her and praying for her and trying to find and help her so she should know she is never truly alone.

12. Many phones have automatic text you can preformat
and send quickly. It would be good to have a "code black" type of preset agreed upon between parents and children.

14. The USA needs a law like Canada that forbids minors being identified
in the media.

That poor girl has it bad enough without seeing her name and picture all over the place.

Any politician who championed that law would get points.

people can see what she looks like in order to find her.

16. Absolutely, that's done here as well. But after the arrest is made...
the law swings into effect.

Mind you, they haven't declared her a victim of anything yet.
