BANGOR -- Waterfront Park in Bangor is the point of origin for a peace rally and march Saturday, September 30. Local Maine peace groups have organized the event to provide the public with an opportunity to express their opposition to the current war in Iraq. A rally at 1:00 PM features MC's Amy Browne and Meredith DeFrancesco, from community radio station WERU; Doug Rawlings, Veterans for Peace; Singer/Songwriter Gray Cox; the Voice of Peace Choir; theatre troop Improv Acadia; and Romulus Rex, Rock Fusion.
At 2:00 PM, a permitted march through the streets from Waterfront Park to the Federal Building and back will underscore the need for an end to the occupation of Iraq. The parade is expected to draw many hundreds as opposition to the war grows steadily among Americans.
“War is a wound in the heart of humanity,” said organizer Tony Aman. “The longer the war, the deeper the wound and eventually the body will suffer and die. This war must end before it kills all sense of our Humanity.”
He added that banners and floats on the stop-the-war theme are welcome. Those interested should contact him at the event's website, stopthewar2006.org or 207-326-9574.
