Parents facing felony charges (Kidnap pregnant daughter)
Edited on Mon Sep-18-06 07:47 AM by MaineDem
NORTH YARMOUTH - The former owners of Portland's State Theatre are scheduled to be arraigned on kidnapping charges today in New Hampshire, felony accusations that stem from a dispute with their pregnant 19-year-old daughter.
Police said Katelyn Kampf's quick thinking opened the door for her escape from Nicholas Kampf, 54, and Lola Kampf, 53, of North Yarmouth after they assaulted and bound her Friday morning and forced her into their car. The Kampfs were angry that their unmarried daughter was pregnant and were taking her to New York state for an abortion, police said.
But Katelyn Kampf, who lives in Portland, managed to steal a family cell phone during the abduction and used it to call police from a Salem, N.H., shopping center later that day - while her parents thought she was using the bathroom, police said.

...
Katelyn Kampf was bound at the wrists and ankles and transported in the back seat of the car. About 3:17 p.m. in Salem, her parents untied her and her father escorted her into a Kmart so she could use the bathroom.
...
Police said they found rope, duct tape, scissors and a rifle in the Lexus. They also said they found an ammunition clip for the rifle in Nicholas Kampf's pants pocket.

3. Weird
I guess they forgot that a 19 year old has the right to make up her own mind about the matter.

Although, if I had gotten pregnant at 16, my mom probably would have forced me to have an abortion, whether I wanted to or not. She wouldn't have used physical force, however, she would have mind-fucked me into it, as that is her way.

4. These a**holes will now become the new posterchildren for
those of us who believe in a woman's right to choose for the RW. These people are going to great lengths to FORCE their own daughter to have an abortion, evidently against her will.

The RW extremists are going to pick this up, and run with it. Mark my words. All of us who believe in CHOICE will be painted with this brush... just in time for the Fall elections.

I'm just saying... as soon as they can, the RW extremist anti-choicers are going to begin to paint us ALL as being just like these whackadoos, probably with Karl Rove's help, and just in time for the elections.

The right to choose will AGAIN be a wedge-issue, and AGAIN we will be the murderous villains.

to support those poor teens "right to chose" <gasp> "LIFE."

What's really fishy is that once a child reaches 18 y.o. I've found / or heard of NO, absolutely NOT ONE parent who would, or rationally "could" be tempted to kidnap their child. However, I'm sure there are a few "underage" notable cases (but very rare).

Beyond that, the people who work at these clinics are HUMANE, I find it hard to believe that they would not question "the teen" directly.

What's with the rifle? Do they, in any sense of delusion, think that they are going to get by with tying her up in the clinic until she's called for the appointment?

No, I've NOT ever heard of a case where a Minor was kidnapped, much less An Adult.

None of "this story" makes any rational sense. As I noted earlier, it's usually the ILLEGAL case of a teen who's frantically attempting to not let her parents know. I think they can now arrest Grandparents for taking their Grandchildren across state lines for an abortion. How nice? After all, doesn't everybody have the exact same RELIGIOUS beliefs as the Fundy Christians?

After all America's Citizen, not even Birth Control will be "a choice" once
the Right Wing Fundies run our Health Care System. :wow:

For the love of fuck, Karl Rove does not run the world. And this kind of paranoid mania does way more damage to credibility than any spin that could be put on one story of some crazy parents. And whether you believe it or not, these things do happen.

Personally i am sick and tired of assholes who see anyone upset over something being told "KKKarl Rove does not rule the world". Grow the fuck up ok? The FACT is it does not take KKKarl to spin and lie about stuff. There are whole hosts of fellow travellers who will do it too. including the Robertsons and Falwells of the world. THEY are ones being spoken of here it looks like to me as being the ones to turn this on it's head, or who set this up NOBODY mentioned Rove until you, so it looke like you are the one with the problem. Stop blaming people if they see and point that out.

54. Tantrum much?
Whether you like it or not, this kind of paranoia over a simple news story is completely out of place and inappropriate. You act like somebody on the right is trying to spin this when I don't think it's even been mentioned by them. And at the same time that the idea of the right spinning it is decried, our side is doing the same thing, trying to make it some great story of personal choice, instead of what it is: a report about a young woman who luckily managed to escape some clearly abusive and overcontrolling parents. To try and capitalize on that is a real scumfuck thing to do.

Whether the parents tried to force her to have an abortion or not have an abortion, it is about her being denied the right to choose.

Countless fundies will need to be reminded of this.

Pro-choice means letting a woman choose whether or not to give birth, and whether or not to keep any child she chooses to bear.

It's about not telling people what to do with their bodies. It's about minding our own effing business.

25. then, what are they?
because if they were progressive, then they would allow their daughter to make her own decision, especially at nineteen. Also, what doctor would give this young woman an abortion without her consent? Yes, something smells foul. My daughter is pregnant, now and is not married--oh my!!!!!! She's happy, her SO is happy-since they've both been through ugly marriages, they've decided that they're going to wait-to make sure they're doing the right thing. They do not want to marry because of the children. She has chosen to give them his last name. If this really did happen, then these parents care way too much on how others may think about them and their family--if that's the case, are you sure these aren't right wingies?

... from the Kampfs.

You'd think an American would know that if a person is brought bound-up into a hospital, someone is going to call the cops immediately.

Also, look at the picture of Nicholas Kampf. I couldn't really put it into words, but he doesn't look American somehow.

So perhaps these are people who are not entirely familiar with how we do things, or where paternal authority ends here in America?

My father in law ALWAYS voted democrat his entire life, straight ticket, and he was the biggest racist/bigot you'd ever want to meet. He hated anyone that wasn't white. And he was Dem. I once asked him why he voted that way considering his views, and his answer: The dems give more services.

14. The American Taliban may try to use this to their favor, but it is
actually a story that favors the freedom of choice side. These parents trying to force an abortion on their daughter are identical to parents who try to force a birth on their daughters. Forcing a woman into any reproductive choice is what pro-choice people are against. Forcing women to do one thing or another regarding reproduction is the anti-choice stance...

When this attitude changes, alot of abortions will cease to occur, IMO. There will always be a need for safe and legal abortion for women who do not want to carry to term, but sometimes the family pride and the girl's reputation are what is at stake and that is is why abortion is sought. Just ask W.

21. yet, about ten years ago there was a case
a woman who was pregnant was in an auto accident-the doctors advised that she would have better odds of survival if she aborted-the parents agreed with it--a lawyer stepped in and stopped it--both woman and fetus died. Pro-choice means that it is the woman's body, it is her right to choose. Most abortions happen in the first trimester--I'm tired of wackos showing third trimester abortions like they happen all of the time--a third trimester abortion is when the woman's life is in jeopardy--however, I'm sure there are some who put the value of the fetus over the value of any woman or girl!!!!! Someone who is pro-life is for the sanctity of all life, meaning the lives of Muslims, Jews, black, white, brown, yellow, red--not just white fetuses!!!! As I see it, if your pro-life, then you must be anti-war, anti-death penalty-after all you do believe in the sanctity of life, right???? It is wrong for these parents to kidnap their daughter and force an abortion-however, I bet they couldn't get a doctor to do one without the daughter's consent. It is equally wrong for an attorney who is anti-abortion to make a statement with someone else's daughter and their decision to give her every chance to survive-for his action may have killed someone they very much loved (not just another woman). If one is not for the sanctity of all life, then he/she is an anti-abortionist, not pro-life.

39. I have heard of this happening before.
Parents don't want to raise their grandchildren for their daughters, financially, and will pressure them into abortion. I know of two families where this happened. The girls were younger than 19, one was 16 and one was 18, but they were pressured nonetheless.

Then you have the parents who will try to force girls to have babies they don't want.

31. Some additional details from the affidavit
A court affidavit said her parents chased her out into the yard after an altercation, grabbed and tied her hands and feet together. Her father then gagged her and carried her to their Lexus and they drove toward New Hampshire.

"The case facts are somewhat bizarre," aid Mark Dion of Maine's Cumberland County Police Department, which is involved in the investigation. "It is a bit of a shock."

He said the Kampfs, who were arraigned in New Hampshire's Salem District Court on Monday on kidnapping charges and held on bail of $100,000 each, appeared to have been angry that their daughter was pregnant by a man who is now in jail.

They can kidnap her and drive her to an abortion clinic, but how do they
force her to have an abortion?

If she's in the clinic, talking with a nurse and being examined--I doubt they
allow her dad and his gun into the examining room.

Once inside any clinic--she could tell someone what is happening.

This "plan" makes no sense whatsoever, and it sounds like bs fabrication.

Sheriff: Race a Factor in Kidnap Case

By KATHARINE WEBSTER, Associated Press Writer

Tuesday, September 19, 2006

(09-19) 07:31 PDT Salem, N.H. (AP) --

A Maine couple accused of tying up their 19-year-old daughter, throwing her
in their car and driving her out of state to get an abortion were upset
because the baby's father is black, a Maine sheriff said Tuesday.

Katelyn Kampf, who is white, told Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion that her
mother "was pretty irate at the fact that the child's father was black, and she
had made a number of disparaging remarks about that," he said.

Katelyn Kampf escaped Friday at a Salem shopping center and called police,
who arrested her parents, Nicholas Kampf, 54, and Lola, 53, both real estate
developers from North Yarmouth, Maine.

The Kampfs were apparently taking their daughter to New York to try to force
her to get an abortion there, police said.

53. and the big irony is...
As it happens, there were legitimate grounds for the Kampfs objecting to their daughter's choice of boyfriend: Reme Johnson has a record for property crimes. But when all this is over, the Kampfs' own criminal records will likely outweigh enormously anything Mister Bad Boyfriend has ever done. The question then will be whether Johnson is willing to take a chance on marrying into "THAT family", given their history of kidnapping and death threats and such.

But they don't seem to have considered any of this.

Which suggests that the irrational racist 'tards theory is correct.

44. Pro-Choice means the choice to NOT have an abortion. Neo-cons think
pro-choice is just to choose to have an abortion- NO, IT DOES NOT!!

She CHOSE not to have an abortion - she chose - she chose ---the CHOICE is hers - one way or the other - not her parents or anybody else's.

Good for her - She made a choice!

48. Now we see the other side of parental notification.
What if the parents FORCE her to have an abortion? What does the anti-abortion crowd say then?

50. Prosecutor:Parents threatened to kill daughter, boyfriend
SALEM - Two parents from Maine, caught in Salem, threatened the lives of their daughter, her boyfriend and her boyfriend's family after kidnapping her and driving toward New York to force her to undergo an abortion, prosecutor Ryan MacFarland said yesterday.

"Both individuals continued to threaten the victim, the unborn child's father and his family," MacFarland said in court.

The Kampfs' lawyer says it's all an "overreaction", and the Kampfs' haven't done anything wrong, and so on in that vein.
