...is primarily between Hindu Tamils and Buddhist Sinhalese.

Perhaps they mention their religion to differentiate them from the two main warring factions.

Possibly something. No way of knowing.

Hinduim may not be a fervently fought-for religion among the Tigers, but it's part of being ethnically Tamil. The Tigers aren't anti-Singhalese Buddhist; they are pro-Tamil and anti-everthing-else on "their" territory. "Muslim" is an ethnicity in areas that have been under Muslim rule. Religion frequently trumps average genetic differences.

That said, the Tamil Tigers have attacked Muslims, and have a Muslim massacre or two to their credit.
