Bush warns Iran of "consequences"

Ahead of his speech to other world leaders gathered here, President Bush on Tuesday said Iran must immediately begin negotiations on its nuclear program and warned Tehran that delay would bring consequences.

Iran’s defiant pursuit of a nuclear program was at the top of the agenda when Bush met with French President Jacques Chirac on the sidelines of the three-day U.N. General Assembly meeting. The French leader is balking at the U.S. drive to sanction Iran for defying Security Council demands that it freeze uranium enrichment.

“Should they continue to stall,” Bush said of Iranian leaders, “we will then discuss the consequences of their stalling.” The president, speaking after his meeting with Chirac, said those consequences would include the possibility of sanctions.

10. I do not think that developing nuclear weapons is there intent. I do think

however that it is hypocritical for the US to get bent out of shape about suspicions about possible intents of Iran in the distant future while continuing to support Israel who definitely has a full blown nuclear weapons program with an estimated 200 nuclear bombs aimed somewhere today.

message to the Iranian people that the government of President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad is using their resources to fund terrorists and pursue nuclear
weapons.

In his annual address to the U.N. General Assembly, Bush directed a portion
of his remarks to Iranians, saying "you deserve an opportunity to determine
your own future" and an economy that rewards their talents.

"The greatest obstacle to this future is that your rulers have chosen to deny
you liberty and to use your nation's resources to fund terrorism and fuel
extremism and pursue nuclear weapons," Bush said.

17. If the potential consequences weren't so deadly

You know what I'd like to see? I'd like to see the Iranian ambassador come out and categorically deny that it is pursuing a nuc-u-lar program of any kind. The word, of course, is "nuclear" but denying the specific allegation as made by Stupidhead would fit right in with his administration's ridiculous parsing of every accusation of wrong-doing against it. "There are no plans on my desk to invade Iraq." Remember that one? It may have been technically true (the plans were in a drawer or on the credenza, but not on the desk), but there was indisputably a plan in the works to invade Iraq.

If the consequences weren't so risky for so many people all over the world, I'd love to see the Iranians issue a verbal statement that they had no nuc-u-lar program, now or ever. What could Chimpy do? Gnash his teeth? Learn how to correctly pronounce "nuclear" at last? Of course, we all know that he'd pitch a hissy fit, and a lot of people living today would soon be turned into corpses.
