Senate Democrats want probe of US hiring in Iraq

WASHINGTON, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Democrats hoping to capture control of the U.S. Congress in this fall elections called on Tuesday for probes of the Bush administration's Iraq rebuilding effort, which they likened to the government's botched response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Senate Democrats urged congressional and Pentagon investigations into hiring and contracting practices in Iraq. The requests came after the Washington Post newspaper reported young novices with Republican political connections got high-level jobs rebuilding Iraq in 2003 and 2004.

"Iraq, in one of the most critical moments in its history when the United States was there was being run by neocons (neoconservatives) in diapers," said Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, a senior Democrat.

"The Coalition Provisional Authority became the Bush administration's FEMA in Iraq," Durbin added, referring to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

2. I hope somewhere on the agenda list
is an investigation of Ken Starr's investigation and the "Arkansas Project" in the 90's. Furthermore, over on the House side, there should be a rescission of the House Impeachment articles against Clinton.

But let's stay focused on the election first. Nobody has won anything yet.

3. What's taken them so long?
The hiring of young unqualified bushites in Iraq has been known for a couple years now. Why are the Dems just now calling for an investigation?

5. the Democratic Policy Committee has held a series of hearings
a senate body led by Sen. Byron Dorgan of ND.

with republicans invited but declining to attend. Though I believe the republican congressman Walter Jones attended a recent one.
