U.S. denies Arar was deported under America's 'extraordinary rendition'

U.S. denies Arar was deported under America's 'extraordinary rendition' policy

WASHINGTON - Facing renewed criticism over its treatment of Maher Arar, the Bush administration on Tuesday denied U.S. intelligence officials deliberately sent the former Ottawa man to Syria for interrogation as a possible terrorist.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said the U.S. government would never knowingly ship a suspect terrorist to another country if it believed that person would be tortured.

Further, Gonzales specifically refuted claims Arar was removed from the U.S. in 2002 as part of the Bush administration's controversial ''extraordinary rendition'' policy.

''Mr. Arar was deported under our immigration laws. He was initially detained because his name appeared on terrorists lists,'' Gonzales told reporters. ''Some people have characterized his removal as a rendition. That is not what happened here. It was a deportation.''

5. It was a deportation -- to Syria?
And I guess we're supposed to believe Mr. Arar stayed silent and never said to US intelligence, "Excuse me, but I'm a Canadian citizen."

6. But even if we did render, we would get assurances against torture.

Gonzo, when you handed terror suspects to dictatorships
like Syria, Egypt, and Uzbekistan, what did you think
would happen?

Turture Boy's denials don't pass the straight face test.
Gonzales is denying these practices while Bush & Co.
fight for the right to continue them.
