stuff, either, but I know what Chavez means.

From Merriam Webster..

devil

"1 often capitalized : the personal supreme spirit of evil often represented in Jewish and Christian belief as the tempter of humankind, the leader of all apostate angels, and the ruler of hell -- usually used with the; often used as an interjection, an intensive, or a generalized term of abuse <what the devil is this?> <the devil you say!>
2 : an evil spirit : DEMON
3 a : an extremely wicked person : FIEND : a great evil

186.  "the devil was here yesterday... it still smells of sulfer today"
(applause and giggles from the audience)

That should be enough to figure out if it was told in jest (although the point he made was serious), or whether he really thinks Bush is the devil.

Makes me wonder if Reagan was serious or not when he said the communists are devils.

Chavez gave a fantastic straight to the point speech, that told it just like it is... The imperialism of the US is going to destroy the world, if not stopped.

No political side-stepping, no forked-tongue talking; Chavez spoke in the common mans language !

He brought up Noam Chomskys book and recommended everyone at the UN to read it.

Unbelievable speech !

We would be criticizing Bush if he used language like that. And even did criticize him when he used terms like Axis of Evil.

But its Hugo, he gets a pass.

Solves nothing and sounds like old Communist Rhetoric with the "Yankee Go Home" line.

Calls Bush the Devil, but cozies up to people like Ahmadenijad.

In the days leading up to September 11. Trying to put a pipeline through Afghanistan, you see. The Taliban wanted too much money. Read about John O'Neill, the FBI chief who spent years trying to get bin Laden and disrupt al CIAda only to be thwarted because Bushco was trying to make a sweet deal with the Taliban.

Generally, when one president tries to overthrow another president, that president wants to become a thorn in the side of the president that tried to overthrow him.

You can't call what Bush has done to the world "Global Activity". Mass murder, that's all.

I'm pretty sure Chavez doesn't give a good goddamn what power brokers in the US think, Democratic or Republican. Here's what's going to have to get through the head of every American at some point this century: people like Chavez are not speaking TO YOU. You can address the world whilke not addressing the United States. In fact, for many, that is an imperative, in the same way inmates planning a revolt would not be speaking to the guards.

Which is why Chavez comments about Bush were so bang on. Calling him the Devil and that it still smelled of sulphur up there, and that a psychiatrist should be called in to understand Bush's comments or whatever...I mean, that shit is just pure gold. Hugo brought his "A" material, and should be headlining on the comedy club circuit. Even if a puffed-up, blustering demagogue like Chavez was delivering these comments, it was friggin' great to hear them. Bush is a puffed-up, blustering demagogue himself, so....

I agree with you that "poor form" is part of a GOP talking point.

Delegates and leaders from around the world streamed back into the chamber to hear Mr Chávez, and when he stepped down the vigorous applause lasted so long that it had to be curtailed by the chair.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,,1877243,00.html

Bush got tepid applause when he embarrassed himself at the UN.

27. Poor form? POOR FORM??!! I'd say slaughtering 100,000 people in Iraq is
"poor form." I'd say advocating and employing torture is "poor form." I'd say looting the federal government is "poor form." I'd say shredding the Constitution is "poor form." I'd say spitting on international law is "poor form." I'd say letting the poor rot and die in the Katrina disaster is "poor form." I'd say applauding (and probably abetting) an attempted violent military coup in Venezuela is "poor form." I'd say pouring US taxpayer dollars illegally into Venezuelan elections, in support of the rich oil elite, is "poor form." I'd say freeing US-based global corporate predators of regulation and rightful taxation, and spreading sweatshop labor and impoverishment around the world, is "poor form." I'd say Bechtel Corp. privatizing the water in Bolivia, and then jacking up the prices to the poorest of the poor--even charging poor peasants for collecting rainwater!--is "poor form." I'd say giving billions of dollars to your vice president's company in no-bid contracts is "poor form." I'd say permitting gas gouging by your multi-billionaire buds in the oil industry is "poor form." I'd say stealing US elections is "poor form."

And I'd say that Hugo Chavez is a brilliant, and brave, and very funny man! Calling Bush "the devil" hit the metaphorical nail right on its head. Billions and billions of people are smiling about it today. The whole world is smiling. Yup. The devil and his evil ways. And imagine someone brave enough to SAY it! Very inspiring to all.

And is it also poor form to speak at the UN and lie about Iraq WMD, as Colin Powell did? Or were you OK with that? I don't think Chavez's words are going to result in over 50,000 innocent lives.

And what has the White House Cockroach ever done for New York? Not as much as Chavez:

Individual homeowners and cooperatives in four of the city's five boroughs will be able to buy cheap fuel this winter from an oil-for-the-poor program, sources have told the Daily News.

CITGO Petroleum, the U.S. subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company, has earmarked 25 million gallons of fuel for low-income New York residents this year at 40% off the wholesale market price.

11. accused Washington of "domination, exploitation
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez took his verbal battle with the United States to the floor of the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday, calling President Bush "the devil."

"The devil came here yesterday," Chavez said. "He came here talking as if he were the owner of the world."

The leftist leader, who joined Iran last week in an alliance against U.S. influence, accused Washington of "domination, exploitation and pillage of peoples of the world."

"We appeal to the people of the United States and the world to halt this threat, which is like a sword hanging over our head," he said.

Maybe Nostradomus meant a scientist and a hothead would save us from the manifestation of the anti-christ (instead of a scientest and a redhead)

As I am not Venezuelan, all I'm left with is observation.

And I observe that Hugo's use of rashness, while once refreshing, is becoming old and he's descending from being a leader to be respected into a raving loon.

He's making it very easy for Washington to isolate him.

Is certainly no statesman but he was damned lucky to be in the right place at the right time. The only thing keeping him at the top of his game right now is oil prices. If oil prices fall, he's going to have to find money for his poverty programs elsewhere. If he tries to cut programs for the poor, he'll find himself the most unpopular man in Venezuela.

SATAN FILES SUIT IN NEW YORK SUPERIOR COURT

Released September 20, 2066

Satan (AKA, Lucifer) filed a lawsuit today in New York superior court against the president of Venezuela alleging that comments made during a speech at the UN General assembly have caused him irreparable psychological damage and have caused him nightmares. The alleged comments arose as a result of the President referring to the leader of the United States as the "Devil"

The lawsuit further alleges a copyright infringement in that Satan will no longer be able to use his influence to "buy peoples souls" for riches on earth as the leader of the US has started a competitive business in the military-industrial complex....

78. Historians on DU- isn't this unprecedented? A personal insult like
this from one leader to another? The rheteric from both Bush and Chavez is frightening IMHO,
and to me, it shows how disasterous our foreign policy has truly been.

85. FULL TEXT OF SPEECH:
Address to the United Nations
Rise Up Against the Empire

By HUGO CHAVEZ

Representatives of the governments of the world, good morning to all of you. First of all, I would like to invite you, very respectfully, to those who have not read this book, to read it.

Noam Chomsky, one of the most prestigious American and world intellectuals, Noam Chomsky, and this is one of his most recent books, 'Hegemony or Survival: The Imperialist Strategy of the United States.'" "It's an excellent book to help us understand what has been happening in the world throughout the 20th century, and what's happening now, and the greatest threat looming over our planet.

The hegemonic pretensions of the American empire are placing at risk the very survival of the human species. We continue to warn you about this danger and we appeal to the people of the United States and the world to halt this threat, which is like a sword hanging over our heads. I had considered reading from this book, but, for the sake of time," "I will just leave it as a recommendation.

It reads easily, it is a very good book, I'm sure Madame you are familiar with it. It appears in English, in Russian, in Arabic, in German. I think that the first people who should read this book are our brothers and sisters in the United States, because their threat is right in their own house.

The devil is right at home. The devil, the devil himself, is right in the house.

"And the devil came here yesterday. Yesterday the devil came here. Right here." "And it smells of sulfur still today.

Yesterday, ladies and gentlemen, from this rostrum, the president of the United States, the gentleman to whom I refer as the devil, came here, talking as if he owned the world. Truly. As the owner of the world.

I think we could call a psychiatrist to analyze yesterday's statement made by the president of the United States. As the spokesman of imperialism, he came to share his nostrums, to try to preserve the current pattern of domination, exploitation and pillage of the peoples of the world.

An Alfred Hitchcock movie could use it as a scenario. I would even propose a title: "The Devil's Recipe."

As Chomsky says here, clearly and in depth, the American empire is doing all it can to consolidate its system of domination. And we cannot allow them to do that. We cannot allow world dictatorship to be consolidated.

The world parent's statement -- cynical, hypocritical, full of this imperial hypocrisy from the need they have to control everything.

They say they want to impose a democratic model. But that's their democratic model. It's the false democracy of elites, and, I would say, a very original democracy that's imposed by weapons and bombs and firing weapons.

What a strange democracy. Aristotle might not recognize it or others who are at the root of democracy.

What type of democracy do you impose with marines and bombs?

The president of the United States, yesterday, said to us, right here, in this room, and I'm quoting, "Anywhere you look, you hear extremists telling you can escape from poverty and recover your dignity through violence, terror and martyrdom."

Wherever he looks, he sees extremists. And you, my brother -- he looks at your color, and he says, oh, there's an extremist. Evo Morales, the worthy president of Bolivia, looks like an extremist to him.

The imperialists see extremists everywhere. It's not that we are extremists. It's that the world is waking up. It's waking up all over. And people are standing up.

I have the feeling, dear world dictator, that you are going to live the rest of your days as a nightmare because the rest of us are standing up, all those who are rising up against American imperialism, who are shouting for equality, for respect, for the sovereignty of nations.

Yes, you can call us extremists, but we are rising up against the empire, against the model of domination.

The president then -- and this he said himself, he said: "I have come to speak directly to the populations in the Middle East, to tell them that my country wants peace."

That's true. If we walk in the streets of the Bronx, if we walk around New York, Washington, San Diego, in any city, San Antonio, San Francisco, and we ask individuals, the citizens of the United States, what does this country want? Does it want peace? They'll say yes.

But the government doesn't want peace. The government of the United States doesn't want peace. It wants to exploit its system of exploitation, of pillage, of hegemony through war.

It wants peace. But what's happening in Iraq? What happened in Lebanon? In Palestine? What's happening? What's happened over the last 100 years in Latin America and in the world? And now threatening Venezuela -- new threats against Venezuela, against Iran?

He spoke to the people of Lebanon. Many of you, he said, have seen how your homes and communities were caught in the crossfire. How cynical can you get? What a capacity to lie shamefacedly. The bombs in Beirut with millimetric precision?

This is crossfire? He's thinking of a western, when people would shoot from the hip and somebody would be caught in the crossfire.

This is imperialist, fascist, assassin, genocidal, the empire and Israel firing on the people of Palestine and Lebanon. That is what happened. And now we hear, "We're suffering because we see homes destroyed.'

The president of the United States came to talk to the peoples -- to the peoples of the world. He came to say -- I brought some documents with me, because this morning I was reading some statements, and I see that he talked to the people of Afghanistan, the people of Lebanon, the people of Iran. And he addressed all these peoples directly.

And you can wonder, just as the president of the United States addresses those peoples of the world, what would those peoples of the world tell him if they were given the floor? What would they have to say?

And I think I have some inkling of what the peoples of the south, the oppressed people think. They would say, "Yankee imperialist, go home." I think that is what those people would say if they were given the microphone and if they could speak with one voice to the American imperialists.

And that is why, Madam President, my colleagues, my friends, last year we came here to this same hall as we have been doing for the past eight years, and we said something that has now been confirmed -- fully, fully confirmed.

I don't think anybody in this room could defend the system. Let's accept -- let's be honest. The U.N. system, born after the Second World War, collapsed. It's worthless.

Oh, yes, it's good to bring us together once a year, see each other, make statements and prepare all kinds of long documents, and listen to good speeches, like Abel's yesterday, or President Mullah's . Yes, it's good for that.

And there are a lot of speeches, and we've heard lots from the president of Sri Lanka, for instance, and the president of Chile.

But we, the assembly, have been turned into a merely deliberative organ. We have no power, no power to make any impact on the terrible situation in the world. And that is why Venezuela once again proposes, here, today, 20 September, that we re-establish the United Nations.

Last year, Madam, we made four modest proposals that we felt to be crucially important. We have to assume the responsibility our heads of state, our ambassadors, our representatives, and we have to discuss it.

The first is expansion, and Mullah talked about this yesterday right here. The Security Council, both as it has permanent and non-permanent categories, (inaudible) developing countries and LDCs must be given access as new permanent members. That's step one.

Second, effective methods to address and resolve world conflicts, transparent decisions.

Point three, the immediate suppression -- and that is something everyone's calling for -- of the anti-democratic mechanism known as the veto, the veto on decisions of the Security Council.

Let me give you a recent example. The immoral veto of the United States allowed the Israelis, with impunity, to destroy Lebanon. Right in front of all of us as we stood there watching, a resolution in the council was prevented.

Fourthly, we have to strengthen, as we've always said, the role and the powers of the secretary general of the United Nations.

Yesterday, the secretary general practically gave us his speech of farewell. And he recognized that over the last 10 years, things have just gotten more complicated; hunger, poverty, violence, human rights violations have just worsened. That is the tremendous consequence of the collapse of the United Nations system and American hegemonistic pretensions.

Madam, Venezuela a few years ago decided to wage this battle within the United Nations by recognizing the United Nations, as members of it that we are, and lending it our voice, our thinking.

Our voice is an independent voice to represent the dignity and the search for peace and the reformulation of the international system; to denounce persecution and aggression of hegemonistic forces on the planet.

This is how Venezuela has presented itself. Bolivar's home has sought a nonpermanent seat on the Security Council.

Let's see. Well, there's been an open attack by the U.S. government, an immoral attack, to try and prevent Venezuela from being freely elected to a post in the Security Council.

The imperium is afraid of truth, is afraid of independent voices. It calls us extremists, but they are the extremists.

And I would like to thank all the countries that have kindly announced their support for Venezuela, even though the ballot is a secret one and there's no need to announce things.

But since the imperium has attacked, openly, they strengthened the convictions of many countries. And their support strengthens us.

Mercosur, as a bloc, has expressed its support, our brothers in Mercosur. Venezuela, with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, is a full member of Mercosur.

And many other Latin American countries, CARICOM, Bolivia have expressed their support for Venezuela. The Arab League, the full Arab League has voiced its support. And I am immensely grateful to the Arab world, to our Arab brothers, our Caribbean brothers, the African Union. Almost all of Africa has expressed its support for Venezuela and countries such as Russia or China and many others.

I thank you all warmly on behalf of Venezuela, on behalf of our people, and on behalf of the truth, because Venezuela, with a seat on the Security Council, will be expressing not only Venezuela's thoughts, but it will also be the voice of all the peoples of the world, and we will defend dignity and truth.

Over and above all of this, Madam President, I think there are reasons to be optimistic. A poet would have said "helplessly optimistic," because over and above the wars and the bombs and the aggressive and the preventive war and the destruction of entire peoples, one can see that a new era is dawning.

As Sylvia Rodriguez says, the era is giving birth to a heart. There are alternative ways of thinking. There are young people who think differently. And this has already been seen within the space of a mere decade. It was shown that the end of history was a totally false assumption, and the same was shown about Pax Americana and the establishment of the capitalist neo-liberal world. It has been shown, this system, to generate mere poverty. Who believes in it now?

What we now have to do is define the future of the world. Dawn is breaking out all over. You can see it in Africa and Europe and Latin America and Oceanea. I want to emphasize that optimistic vision.

We have to strengthen ourselves, our will to do battle, our awareness. We have to build a new and better world.

Venezuela joins that struggle, and that's why we are threatened. The U.S. has already planned, financed and set in motion a coup in Venezuela, and it continues to support coup attempts in Venezuela and elsewhere.

President Michelle Bachelet reminded us just a moment ago of the horrendous assassination of the former foreign minister, Orlando Letelier.

And I would just add one thing: Those who perpetrated this crime are free. And that other event where an American citizen also died were American themselves. They were CIA killers, terrorists.

And we must recall in this room that in just a few days there will be another anniversary. Thirty years will have passed from this other horrendous terrorist attack on the Cuban plane, where 73 innocents died, a Cubana de Aviacion airliner.

And where is the biggest terrorist of this continent who took the responsibility for blowing up the plane? He spent a few years in jail in Venezuela. Thanks to CIA and then government officials, he was allowed to escape, and he lives here in this country, protected by the government.

And he was convicted. He has confessed to his crime. But the U.S. government has double standards. It protects terrorism when it wants to.

And this is to say that Venezuela is fully committed to combating terrorism and violence. And we are one of the people who are fighting for peace.

Luis Posada Carriles is the name of that terrorist who is protected here. And other tremendously corrupt people who escaped from Venezuela are also living here under protection: a group that bombed various embassies, that assassinated people during the coup. They kidnapped me and they were going to kill me, but I think God reached down and our people came out into the streets and the army was too, and so I'm here today.

But these people who led that coup are here today in this country protected by the American government. And I accuse the American government of protecting terrorists and of having a completely cynical discourse.

We mentioned Cuba. Yes, we were just there a few days ago. We just came from there happily.

And there you see another era born. The Summit of the 15, the Summit of the Nonaligned, adopted a historic resolution. This is the outcome document. Don't worry, I'm not going to read it.

But you have a whole set of resolutions here that were adopted after open debate in a transparent matter -- more than 50 heads of state. Havana was the capital of the south for a few weeks, and we have now launched, once again, the group of the nonaligned with new momentum.

And if there is anything I could ask all of you here, my companions, my brothers and sisters, it is to please lend your good will to lend momentum to the Nonaligned Movement for the birth of the new era, to prevent hegemony and prevent further advances of imperialism.

And as you know, Fidel Castro is the president of the nonaligned for the next three years, and we can trust him to lead the charge very efficiently.

Unfortunately they thought, "Oh, Fidel was going to die." But they're going to be disappointed because he didn't. And he's not only alive, he's back in his green fatigues, and he's now presiding the nonaligned.

So, my dear colleagues, Madam President, a new, strong movement has been born, a movement of the south. We are men and women of the south.

With this document, with these ideas, with these criticisms, I'm now closing my file. I'm taking the book with me. And, don't forget, I'm recommending it very warmly and very humbly to all of you.

We want ideas to save our planet, to save the planet from the imperialist threat. And hopefully in this very century, in not too long a time, we will see this, we will see this new era, and for our children and our grandchildren a world of peace based on the fundamental principles of the United Nations, but a renewed United Nations.

And maybe we have to change location. Maybe we have to put the United Nations somewhere else; maybe a city of the south. We've proposed Venezuela.

You know that my personal doctor had to stay in the plane. The chief of security had to be left in a locked plane. Neither of these gentlemen was allowed to arrive and attend the U.N. meeting. This is another abuse and another abuse of power on the part of the Devil. It smells of sulfur here, but God is with us and I embrace you all.

May God bless us all. Good day to you.

112. A courageous speech.
I don't think there's anything there that we haven't said here many times. American hegemony, that we export terror around the world. I can do without references to the devil, but in Bush's case, it seems like a good comparison.

They say they want to impose a democratic model. But that's their democratic model. It's the false democracy of elites, and, I would say, a very original democracy that's imposed by weapons and bombs and firing weapons.

I'm so sick of Dimson I thank God for Chavez! Americans need to storm the white house and take care of Dimson once and for all and then storm Fox News, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, and dish out some fair and balanced justice to the Rupert Murdock's, Bill O'Reilly's , Sean Hannity's, Katy Couric's, Matt Lauer's, Charlie Gibson's, etc., until we get rid of these corrupt greedy politicians and news organizations we are doomed! 119. I guess...
This isn't the popular view but I can't just sit back and "me too!" this Chavez stuff. Seems like we progressives have become perfectly happy accepting hypocracy as long as it's painted with a nice coat of Bush Sucks.

We vilify Bush when he talks about the Axis of Evil. We condem him when he says "come get some." We mock him when makes idiotic comments about other world leaders. Then we cheer a world leader who's recent actions are, at best, verbally provocative. A leader perfectly willing to cozy up to some of the most brutal, backwards dicators in the world (Ahmadinejad, Kim Jong Il). We say "he's a hero!" while we watch him give awards to the President of Iran while ignoring the fact that the religious theocracy in Iran is JUST THE THING we're trying to stop from happening here in the United States. Are we at the point where, just to be anti-bush, that we're okay with an oppressive muslim theocracy but any attempt by the religious right to enforce their beliefs on us is a terrible thing?

We call Bush a coward for not meeting with Chavez...would you want to meet with the person who called you the devil to enter into gainful political talks? Not I. Condem Bush for his stupidity and cheer the man who goes in front of the world to do little more than name calling? Sorry, that's not a bed I'm willing to sleep in.

Its just more hateful, antagonistic rhetoric. Chavez could be the bigger man. Could extend his hand and say "come talk to us," but I see a man only concerned with his own popularity and the fact that his smack talk will make him more popular with the masses and play on their nationalistic feelings.

Not much difference between the two of them, I think. Just children playing another round of "look how big my penis is."

121. Venezuelans have every reason in the world to hate Bush like poison.
Apparently you weren't around to hear about the coup in Venezuela, and the armed kidnapping of Hugo Chavez, and all the preparation which was done for it between the coup leaders and all their trips to meet with personel in Bush's State Department prior to the catastrophe.

Involve yourself in some research, since you obviously missed it the first time around, and get informed on what has happened in Venezuela due to misadventure by the Bush administration, through the hate campaign started against him immediately after stealing the White House, through filthy behavior by Bush's ambassadors, destabilization efforts, etc., etc., etc.

You're not going to pitch half-assed remarks in here and have them respected by those who know better.

Chavez has every right to despise the very man who tried to have him killed, as anyone would.

There is absolutely no comparison between the two, and you damned well know it. One of the two was a man long ago, and the other will never be a man, as he's morally, mentally, emotionally incapable.

126. So if they hate us, and we hate them
What's the point of diplomacy?

I was "around" to hear about the coup in Venezuela. I've seen little that proves we tried to assassinate Chavez. I also know that leaders like Chavez, Kim Jong Il and the "President" of countries like Turkmeinstan are not above staging assassinations and blaming on others to solidify their control. Wouldn't put it past Bush to try something like this. Hope I'm not giving him ideas.

My remarks are only "half-assed" because you disagree with them. I assure you I have done my research, I've just reached a different conclusion than you.

I stand by my comparison. Both of them want nothing more than control, control, control.

You call Bush a child? Is it not childish to go before a world forum and call someone names?

What did Chavez do today that helped world diplomacy? What did he to today to help difuse tensions?

182. Diplomacy's point is to avoid war
Look, I don't know how old you are but, Nixon went to China, Reagan met with Gorbachev, and the cold war ended without becoming a hot war. You meet with your enemies to avoid killing large amounts of each other's citizens.

This is why Bush refuses to meet with his enemies. He alone among our modern presidents, welcomes war with open arms. In fact he enjoys it.

...has not done the things that Bush has done, ie. invade other countries.

Still, you have not answered my question and this is telling, especially in light of your comment "which is cause nothing but problems."

How does what Chavez said today help to FIX the problem of the diplomatic rift between the US and Venz? It doesn't. Just makes the rift wider. It's the same sort of nationalistic, antagonistic speech-making that Bush makes to rile up the Republicans and rally the short-sighted to his banner. If Bush were to call Chavez a Devil the republicans would yipee and yeehaw about how great/funny it was.

points, but I still have to disagree with you. It is speeches like this that are great....the reason? He used something to equate the evil the Bush regime is doing - did he purposely choose the devil as his analogy so the fundies would get the message? No, I don't think so becuase most of them are beyond hope anyhow.

He got everyone's attention and kept it. He brought a good message to the floor about peace and caring and how people must care for each other.

So he meets with Castro, Jong II and the like - so what? He's building a coalition imho and in order to do so, he's making friends wherever he can with whoever he can to promote his message. You win with majority and everyone can agree to disagree, that's usually how civilized people act and resolve things, not with bombs and marines as he stated.

What I find is really sad - - I am on a business trip in Ontario and Chavez got a standing O in the restaurant where the tv was on. That says it all to me....America is lost as long as derchimpster is in power.

Yes, it was an old school speech tactic, but it accomplished just what he wanted, he got their attention and he didn't have to do it using the word terrorist in every other sentence.

Wanna lay money on it that Karen Hughes took notes on how the speech was constructed? She could learn from ol' Hugo! Not that I want her to do so, but our own party could learn as well.

I am glad he put a voice to what a lot of countries are thinking but havent got the guts to say out loud for fear of retribution from a little man who deserves absolutely no respect in the world (and judging from the reaction of the room, hasn't any).

I am glad he mentioned the citizens of the US as not wanting wars....we want peace as well....even made Bush seem out of touch with his own people....(he is except for the loony tuners....)

Hats Off Hugo - you done good by telling the world the emperor has no clothes.

133. which is nuttier: starting a disastrous war, or calling the guy who did...
... start that disastrous war "the devil"?

Chavez called Bush the devil, and now we hear a mighty orchestra of knees jerking in perfect sync.

Really now! Why is it that telling someone off in no uncertain terms makes you a raving nutjob, but telling lies to start a war that consumes tens of thousands of lives just makes you "decisive", or maybe "rash", or maybe even "a person who has committed an unfortunate blunder"?

Let's cut the crap. We all know why people here in the US respond the way they do to stories like these. Hugo Chavez is the nonwhite leader of a smallish, majority-nonwhite country. Furthermore, he is a man of the Left. That means, even to some American liberals, that he is an upstart. They'll never admit it, but they have a visceral reaction to this man because he fails to moderate his tone when speaking to or about the "Leader of the Free World" -- a person who, despite the differences in ideology -- is demographically one of their own kind. Perhaps they can't help feeling that in spite of everything, George Bush is still entitled to a certain deference from the likes of Chavez, and so they grow uneasy and hostile when such deference is not evident.

From that point of view, George Bush -- no matter how catastrophic his reign -- is still one of "us"; Hugo Chavez, no matter how much good he does, is still one of "them".

It's really just identity politics.

Condemns Chavez's Attack On Bush
WASHINGTON - I want to express my extreme displeasure with statements by the President of Venezuela attacking U.S. President George Bush in such a personal and disparaging way during his remarks at the United Nations General Assembly...George Bush is the President of the United States and represents the entire country. Any demeaning public attack against him is viewed by Republicans and Democrats, and all Americans, as an attack on all of us.

But what I hear you saying is that your hatred for George W. Bush has manifested as a nihilistic hatred for America. It's a prevalent attitude in this thread. Incidentally, for future reference, you don't pick a fight with someone and then tell them not to defend themselves and expect them to comply. If you didn't want a response, you should have avoided the confrontation; however, based on the strength of your argument and the overall ridiculous nature of your position, I can understand why you wouldn't want to be placed in the position of having to defend your views for any length of time.

138. Bush is the Devil, the Anti-Christ, a despot, a tyrant, a war criminal
Bush is the greatest threat the world has faced since the days of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.

I fully agree with Chavez's remarks, and I support his efforts to oppose Bush's wars of aggression and imperialist expansion.

Viva Chavez! Viva Venezuela! Down with the Devil Bush!

Chavez Condemns Bush at UN

United Nations, Sep 20 (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez denounced George Bush Wednesday, for having reiterated his guidelines to the UN in order to continue his current scheme of domination, exploitation, and destruction of the peoples of the world.

Speaking in his turn at the 61st session of the UN General Assembly, Chavez compared Bush´s speech to a Hollywood movie which, he said, could be titled “The Devil´s Recipes”.

The Venezuelan president went on to affirm that, contrary to Bush´s repeated statements that his government wants peace, “what he really wants is to impose his model on us.”

He censured Washington´s new threats against Venezuela and other countries such as Iran, as well as its aggressive, immoral campaign to prevent his country from being elected as a non-permanent UN member in December.

Chavez reiterated the need to restructure the UN, adding that the time has come to admit that its system has collapsed and is useless.

151. The Guardian: Chávez attacks 'devil' Bush in UN speech
Delegates and leaders from around the world streamed back into the chamber to hear Mr Chávez, and when he stepped down the vigorous applause lasted so long that it had to be curtailed by the chair.

Here is The Guardian's reporting of this story:

Chávez attacks 'devil' Bush in UN speech

· Venezuelan accuses US of double standards on terror
· Bolivian president condemns war on drugs

Ed Pilkington in New York
Thursday September 21, 2006
The Guardian

Brandishing a copy of Noam Chomsky's Hegemony or survive: America's quest for global dominance, the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, cemented his reputation as Washington's chief irritant yesterday with a fiery performance at the United Nations.

In a 15-minute address to the annual gathering of international leaders in New York, President Chávez said he could still "smell sulphur" left behind by the "devil", George Bush, who had addressed the chamber 24 hours before.

His speech, which veered between a rousing appeal for a better world and a florid denunciation of the US, included the claim that President Bush thought he was in a western where people shot from the hip: "This is imperialist, fascist, assassin, genocidal, the empire."

Mr Chávez complained that his personal doctor and head of security had been prevented from disembarking at New York airport by the American authorities. And then he coined the phrase that will now forever be etched into UN history as one of the more colourful criticisms levelled at the US president from his own turf: "This is another abuse and another abuse of power on the part of the devil. It smells of sulphur here, but God is with us and I embrace you all."

154. Chavez already proved himself to people of good will long ago.
He doesn't need to keep proving himself to right-wingers every day in the U.S.

Most DU'ers who read much are well aware of the generous gestures made by Venezuela IMMEDIATELY after Hurricane Katrina of all KINDS of assistance, in abundance.

We followed with interest the growing number of states which had Democratic Representatives searching for a better heating oil price last winter, for their needy constituents. They begged for help from the largest American oil companies, and were blown off abruptly. Apparently it's unamerican to ask U.S. oil men to help their fellow Americans.

These same Congressmen, as well as representatives of various Native American tribes went to ask for help from Venezuela AFTER being shoved out by oil companies here. They ALL received deeply discounted oil for their neediest citizens. A bunch of Democratic Congressfolk were involved, starting with William Delahunt, from Boston, as the number of states grew to include Maine, New York, Vermont, Delaware, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and others.

Those of us with memories which retain information longer than a few months don't need to see daily affirmations of Hugo Chavez's worthiness. He established his character in the world long ago.

It was astonishing to witness the fact he dared to insult human intelligence by pulling that filthy insult outta somewhere as soon as he stole the pResidency.

The "Axis of Evil" seemed designed to appeal to the nearly totally brain-damaged among us, the real knuckle-draggers. What a pity any administration would gear its communication level to speak directly to the ignorant, the mentally incompetent, the hopelessly childish.

As the wealthiest 2% constitute his money base, the most mentally diminished among us constitute his voting base. I guess he HAS to talk to them in their terms to have any loyal voting base at all.

The literal "demonizing" in the UN setting may be a bit over the top for some folks (shades of WWE trash-talking?), but that particular quote was pretty funny. (In fact, he could have just said that, and people would have gotten the point about Bush!)

169. Chavez is a brilliant performer.
He started out with a bit of comedy (that really hit home), and then moved on to a serious
discussion of just what really is wrong with the UN. Dominated by vested interests. He's
right - after the debacle of Lebanon, how can any of us have faith in the peace-making power
of the UN? And we know who crippled it.

I saw part of Bush's address to the UN last night on TV, and it was more of the same. With
his smirk and his squinty eyes, he just looked sly. Wouldn't buy a used car from him.

I hope tonight we might get to see something of Chavez.

Orlando Letellier and his American assistant, Ronnie Moffit, and injured her husband right in the middle of the day in Washington D.C. simply because he was friendly to Cuba.

Oh, yeah. Also murdered the Cuban ambassador to the U.N. on New York streets, as well.

George Bush pardoned the murderers of Letellier. They only served a very few years before he cut them loose as soon as he stole the pResidency.
GEORGE II'S DANGEROUS LIAISONS

Presidential blessing for Miami terrorists

~snip~
ON May 20, in Miami, almost one week after confessing that he knew
before September 11 that terrorists were going to hijack commercial
planes in U.S. territory, President George W. Bush suddenly abandoned
his rhetoric of the last eight months.

The White House incumbent was in Miami to give a speech full of
violent anti-Cuba rhetoric. He did not once mention the word
"terrorist," and for good reason: he was completely surrounded by
eminent Miami terrorists.
(snip)

Also present were:

* Félix Rodriguez, one of the Watergate burglars and the head of the
drug operation in El Salvador's Ilopango base that allowed the
Nicaraguan contras to buy arms, financed by cocaine sales on U.S.
territory. A buddy of George Bush I and Otto Reich, both of whom
covered up his activities, Rodriguez was closely linked to terrorist
activities by secret organization Omega-7, responsible for several
attacks and assassinations.

* Huber Matos, head of Independent Democratic Cuba, who
"distinguished" himself in the dirty war in Nicaragua.

* Armando Pérez Roura, a Batista follower, Alpha 66 member, leader of
the terrorist group Cuban Unity, involved in various criminal
activities in Miami, hysterical announcer on a well-known terrorist
radio station. Over the years Alpha 66, led by Nazario Sargent, has
instigated and organized many terrorist raids on Cuba (all of which
failed). In Miami, he continues to openly advocate the absolute need
for violent actions without any interference by the authorities. His
son also trafficked drugs.

* "Specially" invited to the event were killers Dionisio Suárez
Esquivel and Virgilio Paz Romero, who had the pleasure of personally
thanking their benefactor George Bush. The two men were freed by
President Bush in August 2001 (just before the September 11 attacks),
after being imprisoned for the murders of Chilean Ambassador Orlando
Letelier and human rights activist Ronnie Moffit on a Washington DC
street! This horrendous crime was denounced throughout the entire
world, except in Miami of course.

Letelier was killed instantly when the bomb atop the A-frame of his car ripped up through the floorboards under his legs as he drove around the circle. He was on his
way to work at the Institute for Policy Studies, where he had become internationally known for his outspoken criticism of the Chilean military regime.
Ronni Moffitt was sitting on the passenger's side of the front seat. She died a few seconds after the blast as she staggered from the shattered, burning car. Her
husband, and IPS co-worker, Michael Moffitt, suffered slight injuries.

On edit:

BEFORE he was murdered, back in Chile, Orlando Letelier had ALSO been TORTURED by the Pinochet regime. Nice touch, isn't it?
