Mussolini's Grandaughter Defends Heritage

First she left her right-wing party, furious about its leader's denunciation of Italy's fascist past. Then Alessandra Mussolini, proud granddaughter of the late Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, decided she'd defend her heritage by starting a political movement of her own.

Mussolini's announcement last week severed her ties with the National Alliance party, and especially its leader, Gianfranco Fini. It also showed how some party officials and the rank-and-file still have a deep nostalgia for the facist government, though it may not be politically correct.

Known in the media simply as "The Granddaughter," Mussolini, 40, is a burst of contradictions known for her blend of blunt talk and theatrical gestures. She has condemned some of her grandfather's anti-Semitic practices, but has always fought to defend his name.

During a high-profile visit to Israel last month, Fini condemned "the shameful chapters in the history of our people" and denounced as "disgraceful" the anti-Jewish laws promulgated in 1938 under fascist rule. (snip/...)

4. Her Filial Piety May Be Touching, But...

I'm old-fashioned enough to believe that families should try to support each other, even when some of their members are indeed stinkers. So even while I condemn the tyranny and brutality of Mussolini's regime and its ugly legacies, I still find Ms. Mussolini's filial piety touching, however strongly I disagree with her views about Grandpa.

I probably could get angrier, but Benny the Moose is nearly fifty years dead. However pleasant he may have been in private, I don't miss him or his politics.

I hope that she has avoided studying the reality of fascist Italy and will someday avail herself to the truth. But I believe she is really an ardent fascist. Of course the NA is the offspring of the MSI, the main post-war fascist party in Italy. Fini is just trying to "mainstream" in order to appease international forces.
