U.S. House Judiciary Panel Opposes Military Tribunals Measure

Sept. 20 (Bloomberg) -- A U.S. House committee opposed legislation favored by the Bush administration to create military tribunals for terrorist suspects that critics said would weaken protections for prisoners of war.

Nonetheless, the House Judiciary Committee cleared the way for action on the measure by the full House. The panel voted 20- 17 to reject the bill and then took a voice vote to send it to the full House.

...

The version that the House Judiciary Committee rejected today was approved by the House Armed Services Committee last week. In addition to altering the Geneva Conventions' language against torture, it also would deny defendants access to classified information that could be used to convict them.

The House version would give terrorists ``the fairness and legal protections that none of their innocent victims ever enjoyed,'' said Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner, a Wisconsin Republican, before the surprise rejection by the panel.

1. That pretty much went party line on the vote

There are 17 democrats on the committee - I'm guessing they all voted against it

3. Rejected by committee, sent to the full House anyway
What's the point of the committee hearing, then? Although this will force more Pukes to have to vote in favor of torture, openly and publicly. Then they get to explain to the folks back home why they want to see our fellows captured, tortured and executed.

6. Time for Nasty Denny Hastert and Timmay Boehner to bang some skulls
and crunch some votes at the President's bidding.

8. Looks like the repubs are trying to force a re-vote
Currently considering a motion to reconsider the vote rejecting the bill. My guess is that they've either found a missing member or twisted some arms.

9. They just succeeded in reversing the earlier vote and favorably
reported the bill. Apparently some repubs voted no before they voted yes.
