Kerry Eyes Clinton As Mideast Envoy
I finally found something on the story.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20031203-100134-8343r.htm
Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts yesterday said if elected president, he would consider sending former President Bill Clinton to the Middle East as a U.S. envoy, raising the possibility of Mr. Clinton returning to government in a Democratic administration.
Mr. Kerry, a contender for the Democratic presidential nomination, told the Council on Foreign Relations that the former president would be one of his three top choices for a presidential "ambassador to the peace process" to work with Israel, its neighbors and the Palestinians.
Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean made a similar suggestion in October, saying Mr. Clinton would be his envoy to the Middle East.
Republicans said turning to Mr. Clinton is a bad idea.

C-span is talking about this today. Also Clinton had an article in USA today which I didn't find.

Democrat Would Name Top Envoy to Mideast Process
By REUTERS

Published: December 3, 2003

Filed at 2:12 a.m. ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic White House hopeful John Kerry said on Wednesday he would quickly appoint an ambassador to the Middle East peace process -- and named two former presidents and an ex-secretary of state as likely candidates -- if he won the 2004 election.

The Massachusetts senator is one of nine Democrats vying for the right to challenge President Bush as he seeks a second term next year. Kerry said among ``the handful of uniquely qualified'' Americans he would consider for the post were past Democratic Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, as well as Republican James Baker, a former secretary of state.

``Leaders of good will on both sides -- private citizens as well as public officials -- are working to advance the peace process, with some of them offering the outlines of a final settlement,'' Kerry said in remarks prepared for delivery at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

Laying out his foreign policy plans for the first 100 days of a Kerry administration, the senator said he would move immediately to rebuild U.S. alliances and define a global security strategy that was collective, not ``imperial.''

11. This single idea of Kerry's has turned me off of him for good
I'd pick Larry Eagleburger* before I'd pick James Baker. Hell, I'd pick Nixon's corpse before I'd pick Baker...

*Eagleburger was strongly against the Iraq invasion, despite being Poppy's Sec of State after Baker left the post to direct Poppy's 1992 reelection bid...

12. kerry mentioned eagleberger also
and a bunch of other officials from the first bush administration who worked on the israel/palestine peace process. he was showing a contrast between current administration and previous administrations on their attention and handling of the issue. and how this administration is pretty much ignoring it.

14. But he mentioned Baker...
James Baker, between his infamous role in the election theft of 2k, and defending the Saudis against the lawsuits of the 9/11 victims' families, should have NEVER even been considered.

I like John Kerry, but to me, this is infinitely worse than Dean's flag flap, or even Holy Joe's assertion that Faux News is a credible news source.

15. He's not going to appoint James Baker
Kerry's trying to effect a split within the Republican Party. Because Baker, despite being an absolutely despicable human being, nevertheless did more for the Middle East peace process than anybody in the current Administration has.

The current goons don't seem to give a damn about much of anything other than Iraq and tax cuts.

5. The Republicans think it's a bad idea because they fear Clinton's
charisma and pull with the people. Kerry is indeed brilliant in knowing what is needed for our country to restore our beloved principles and good will to the international community.

10. That's why you see this story in the Moonie Times first...
Gotta get the message out to the neocons... Of course, NewsMax will have it next but the spin will be that Clinton planted the story because he can't stand being out of the spotlight... :eyes:

7. Another Dean idea Kerry likes
Were Kerry to get the nomination, he'd need Howard Dean on his staff so he could figure out what to do.

13. Wow
I finally got a topic that wasn't a dupe. You Du'ers are hard to beat.:9
It was stated that Dean came up with it, then I see Kerry did. It doesn't really matter. It is a great Idea. Baker is not, though if he is the underling, maybe Clinton could keep him in check? ?

Has anyone seen the story from Bill in USA Today?
The whole story excited me this morning. Finally a chance for diplomacy, maybe. The Clinton Haters were out in full force on C-Span. Just the thought of Clinton had them all sexed up.
