U-N speech gives boost to sales of Noam Chomsky book

NEW YORK It isn't quite Oprah's book club, but yesterday's U-N address by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (OO'-goh CHAH'-vez) has had an unexpected impact on the best-seller lists of two major Web sites.

At the start of his talk, during which Chavez referred to President Bush as "the devil," Chavez held up a book -- Noam Chomsky's "Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance."

He then proceeded to recommend it to everyone in the General Assembly, as well as to the American people.

Chavez later told reporters that Americans should read the book "instead of watching Superman movies."

I think he said at a press conference after the speech that one of his greatest regrets was "not meeting Chomsky before he died" only to be told by a reporter that Chomsky is alive and well.

14. It is truly a shame that Rangel and Pelosi would

take a position, a xenophobic position at that, Chavez...I would dare to bet that neither of them read the speech and depended on the media's translation of the speech. If any has their e-mail addresses they should demand that the speech be translated for them by a Spanish speaking individual...maybe then they'll take their heads out of their asses...
