http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-3463058,00.html LOS ANGELES (AP) - An environmental activist
who spent 72 days in a 400-year-old oak tree to
prevent a developer from cutting it down no
longer faces the threat of a trespassing lawsuit.
Developer John Laing Homes said Wednesday it
would drop its civil trespassing claim against John
Quigley, 42.
``John Quigley has shown a steadfast
commitment to saving the tree, and while we have
differing ideas on how to accomplish this, we
share that same goal,'' said Bill Rattazzi, a
regional vice president for the developer.
In a compromise with environmentalists, the
developer agreed to relocate the tree a few
hundred yards down the road from its disputed
location, where the developer wants the road
widened for a housing development. The cost of
the move to a nearby preserve, including security
and attorney fees, is expected to exceed $1
million.
