Rocket explodes near U.S. Embassy shortly after Rumsfeld meets with Afghan president

(Kabul, Afghanistan-AP Dec. 4, 2003 10:30 AM) _ A rocket exploded in a field 300 yards from the U.S. Embassy in Kabul on Thursday about two hours after U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld met with Afghanistan's leader in another part of the capital, officials said.

A U.S. military official said Rumsfeld had safely left the country to continue his tour of Central Asia. No one was injured in the explosion, which one official blamed on fighters from Afghanistan's ousted Taliban rulers or their ally, renegade warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

It was not immediately known whether he was still in Afghanistan when the blast occurred.

Rumsfeld, who earlier in the day was in northern Afghanistan, met two hours before the blast with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in the President Palace not far from the embassy.

As police and soldiers with flashlights searched the field where the rocket landed on a moonlit night, Kabul military commander Mohammed Ayub Salangi said they found a piece of shrapnel that appeared to come from a truck-launched rocket. (snip/...)

2. Not surprising...
Karzai, like little man bush, is trapped inside his palace with no place to go. He can't go anywhere freely unless it's staged and with his American bodyguards. Last month, Christian Amanpore had a very explosive report on Karzai and Afghanastan.

3. It is amazing how ineffective these ME Rockets and RPG's are....
"No one hurt or injured."

And you hear it constantly in reports of any Iraq conflict.

I mean, my god, we have made FIRECRACKERS illegal here in many parts of America because too many people are injured by them.

6. Looks like Rummy's on someone's hit list but I'd much rather he be held
accountable for the mess he pushed for than be taken out.

7. zactly right - don't need to be making "martyrs" of the BFEE !

. . hope they ALL live long lives

. . we're still "doing" war criminals from WW2

. . so let that gang of thugs live long, so they can pay

. . and it won't be the $$$ that hurts them

It'll be the SHAME and DISCRACE that will hound their family names in the history books

So I wish them all good health, and I hope to live long enough to see them all shamed.
