Black Muslim leader Farrakhan discloses illness

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, 73, has suffered new health problems relating to earlier diagnosed prostate cancer and has canceled all engagements, he said in a letter published on the Web site of his church.

"I have been suffering from the after-effects of an extremely high dose of radiated seed implantation that indeed killed the cancer cells that had broken the prostate capsule, but over time, these seeds have done severe internal damage," he said in the letter dated September 11 and published online at http://www.noi.org.

"I am more than fortunate. I am blessed by Allah to be alive," he added.

Farrakhan, who once called Judaism a "gutter religion" and later said his comments were simply misinterpreted street talk, was a driving force behind the 1995 million-man march on Washington.

There is a play about MLK and Malcolm that speaks to their secret friendship and mutual respect. Malcolm's family and MLK's family have been and remain dear friends. Malcolm's daughter spoke at the Memorial for Mrs. King.

I watched his 1st and 2nd Million Man March replays on CSPAN for hours and did not hear him speak ill of anyone other than those,like Bush, who are not treating the poor, those with Aids and others that have no voice, with dignity and respect.

He wanted to be Inclusive!

Did he make mistakes in his early years, most leaders do.

Has he changed ~ yes!

BTW, I think most Jews would forgive Farakahhan if he ASKED for it. I'm not completely sure if Byrd did that, but I'm assuming he did. I'm not the biggest Byrd fan (and for that matter I won't even hold it against a black person being against any KKK member knowing their history of terror in the US against blacks), but I think he has made it clear his association with the KKK was long ago in his past and has nothing to do with who he is now (though I think his corporate whoring is a different matter).

I don't recall Farakahhan asking for Jews' forgiveness or reaching out to make ammends.

This guy just reminds me of a less overweight Jerry Falwell. His rantings sound like something from Pat Robertson. Hell, him and the other two reverands would certainly agree about gays...And hell, maybe if you got deep down to it, their opinion of Jews are probably similar too (only difference is that Robertson and FAlwell need them for the rapture).

I also think his "influence" among the black community is exagerrated. Blacks aren't sheep. They don't just cling to any charismatic figure that comes along. I think it's insulting to believe that so many blacks would just follow some antisemetic loon.

One of my best friends is a black Muslim and I seriously doubt most black Muslims are even members of NOI. While it may sparked initial interest of Islam among blacks, I think most AA Muslims would consider themselves just Muslims. Now granted, I don't know his family history (perhaps his father was or is a follower), but even still, I think many blacks would look at him how many whites look at the other two reverands (granted the most amusing thing about Robertson is his "outreach" to minorities always having a token one or two around) .
