Activists unveil stealth browser

Story last modified Fri Sep 22 11:36:00 PDT 2006

Hacktivismo, a group of human-rights advocates and computer security experts, has released a Firefox-based browser designed to allow anonymous Web surfing.

The Web browser, called "Torpark," is a modified version of Portable Firefox. Released last week, it can be run directly from a USB drive, meaning it can be used on public terminals in cybercafes. It creates an encrypted connection to the TOR (The Onion Router) network, which supplies a succession of different IP addresses.

"Torpark causes the IP address seen by the Web site to change every few minutes, to frustrate eavesdropping and mask the requesting source," Hacktivismo said in a statement.

For example, a user could be in London and Web sites would see an IP address from a university in Germany, or other addresses belonging to the TOR network.

27. And how will you feel...
when the Justice Department comes knocking on your door because someone was surfing a "questionable" website, and the program mimics your ip address?

volunteers to the TOR network.

9. OK THAT"S scary.
If the US military got there first, they must know more about it than we do.

33. The Office of Naval Research originally developed it.
That doesn't make it a bad thing.

(One would like to believe our military hasn't all been assimilated by the dark side... :scared: )

My own gut feeling is that the internet is much more transparent to government agencies than any of us would like to believe. Onion routing is a screen that keeps the biting flys out, but it won't protect you from home invasions.

To put it another way, if your secret agency has the ability to watch both ends of the pipe, it really doesn't matter how things are routed in between.

6. I'm looking at sites calling for the overthrow of the Bush Administration.
This November we will hog-tie them with a Democratic House, and in 2008 we will throw these rat bastards and cockroaches entirely out of our White House.

I hope Bush has to exile himself to Dubai in shame. Maybe he can hire some nice party-boys there and live happily ever after.

Hey wait, is there something wrong with that?

:P

I hate spy vs. spy. It only encourages the cowardly little worms of this world. If you live in the United States you are supposed to be free. Stand tall and say "Yeah, I was looking at that. Ooooweeeee...damn, that guy is HOT!"

:woohoo:

From where I'm sitting, if I could think of a practical use for this I might use it, but for now I can't. I'm not the sort of person who signs right back up with a new screen name and a different IP address after I've been banned from a place.

12. Tor clients do slow down surfing, so it may not be good for
us dial up users.

I'm not paranoid enough to start using it.

I've had a file at the FBI since 1965, if I haven't been taken for a ride in a black sedan by now, chances are they are not interested in me and my activities.

13. Your dialup is already so slow that you couldn't even notice the extra
server hops. They happen at T1 speeds.

20. Couldn't it be useful in deterring spyware?
I get spam that weirds me out sometimes...Spam that uses words like "rehearsal" and "orchestra" in the subject line. It's clearly designed to bait me, personally, into reading their crap.

were making about Creationism. Now I receive at least 3 spam mails a day offering me a "Christian" home mortgage. Fortunately, I have a very good spam filter.

11. You would be surprised to find
that people from all over the World work on open-source software for free. This is the real New World Order. Real worldwide democracy and sharing of resources.

This is not the New World Order envisioned by bush gang.

19. Got linux working
following the instructions at tor.eff.org. I had to rebuild tor for my version of redhat, but I could use the DAG repository packages for privoxy and libevent. Consider getting the Torbutton firefox extension.

Browsing is significantly slower. I ran into cookie problems trying to post this message to DU with Tor enabled. It appears Tor would be great for general browsing on an as needed basis.

15. I used to run Ghost surf which does the same thing and more.
It seemed pretty decent. I could definitely detect a slow down when I adjusted the security level to the highest setting and at least one conservative web site that I was banned from wouldn't allow me access when I was running the router; however, when I disengaged the router, I had complete access and was able to log into the site with a new username which I couldn't do before I bought the program. I've recently changed my IP the old fashioned way (new state, new computer, new provider) so I'm not running it anymore.

16. Another big advantage is the reduction in spam. All these web sites
that track your IP and them pummel you with spam mailings just because you visited their sites are thwarted.

I encourage any and all to download and use the program. This program effectively thwarts Gonzales' push to have ISPs database individuals' Internet behavior.

Freedom!
