U.S. spy chief warns of Al-Qaida attempt to infiltrate into Lebanon

U.S. intelligence chief John Negroponte said Friday that the United States is taking seriously the possibility that Al-Qaida could expand its activities into Lebanon, based on intercepted communications, among other sources.

Negroponte said such a move, already publicly urged by Al-Qaida leaders, could not be ruled out despite the chasm between the predominantly Sunni Muslim group and Lebanon's militant Shiite Hezbollah, which ended a 34-day war with Israel last month.

The head of the United State's intelligence services made the remarks in an interview with Reuters and the International Herald Tribune on the sidelines of a conference run by think-tank Oxford Analytica.

Negroponte said Al-Qaida's ambition to expand in the region had been stated in a letter from its deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri to its then chief in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, which was intercepted and released by the United States last year.

Al Qaeda isn't so much anti-US as it is anti anything-that-isn't-Sunni. And that includes those "terrible sons of pigs" the Shiites.

Even if Negroponte is right, I don't think this marriage of convenience would ever fly. Naturally, he'd never even consider, much less mention that possibility.

So they had clear warning not to mess with Lebanon, disrupt Hezbollah and its social services, destroy infrastructure, slaughter innocents, bomb Beirut (the moderate Muslims' "showcase" city), invade, blockade emergency assistance, and enrage not just Shias, but Christians, against the west and Israel?

Same crapola as with Iraq: destroy the place, then blame its people for sympathizing with jihad.
