Pelosi takes barbs in pursuit of gavel

Pelosi takes barbs in pursuit of gavel

By NANCY BENAC, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 27 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Rep. Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) stuffs cotton in her ears when she takes her grandkids to a rock concert. She's so petite that a policeman once lifted her out of her shoes during an evacuation of the Capitol. She's a chocoholic with a great giggle.

And she's Exhibit A as Republicans argue that Americans would be crazy to let Democrats take over the House.

"A disaster," former GOP Speaker Newt Gingrich warns, calling the prospect of the San Francisco-area congresswoman standing third in the line of presidential succession truly frightening. "A hyperpartisan obstructionist," a GOP campaign tract pronounces.

Pelosi, leader of the House Democrats, has twice presented Republican
Dennis Hastert with the speaker's gavel as the GOP extended its control of the House for two more years. "This is getting tiresome, Mr. Speaker," Pelosi joked last time.

4. The last thing I would want in a House Majority Leader is "a great giggle"
No, let her go back to fund raising for a living. Perhaps we need to elect new blood - some other Democrat for her District.

I'm very disappointed with her performance.

8. On what do you base this opinion?
I'm curious. I haven't been following her career too closely. I think she probably has a very difficult job.

9. She's led a very diverse caucus in one of their most cohesive years.
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 07:30 PM by Rose Siding
You're right -I believe it's very hard for her not to go as full metal liberal as she is in every single instance. It would have definitely been a much worse year for us without her leadership. Some of the conservative dems are really entrenched and to have lost them from the caucus would have been disastrous.

I admire her a great deal.

Here's a good, recent write-up about her. She was very wise and selfless in her handling of her support for Murtha's Iraq plan-

10. I don't know how I would advise Nancy to be more effective...
...except I would like to give her some tips to get "on message" with the energy crisis.

I think she has had trouble getting ahead of the Bush-9/11-personality-cult that the media built.

Notably though, there are four trolls on this thread working a two day old discontent about Hugo Chavez. Posting things that divide Democrats is a dead giveaway as a troll modus.

13. I love how some people on DU call others trolls
... Simply because they have a dissenting voice. Pathetic.

17. That's it in a nutshell
A lot of the trolls would disappear if only DU would post ip addresses on tombstones, make a policy of contacting trolls' ISPs, etc.

15. So what lets not vote for the Democrats?
I am a little puzzled this being an election year and all. I am sure she hasn't cured Cancer yet either but I think she is doing a helluva job for the position that she is currently in. Just because she doesn't agree that Chavez should come here and speak poorly about our dictator doesn't mean she supports him.... In other words if a foreign leader came to America and lambasted Bill Clinton when he was in office, I like to believe that the majority of Americans whether they agree with his policies or not would at least have the courage to say that is not right to call him the Devil... even in jest.
