Wash Post Endorses Lieberman for Senate -- While Hitting War on Front Page
NEW YORK The Washington Post's editorial page endorsed Sen. Joe Lieberman for re-election in his third-party Connecticut U.S. Senate race on Sunday, saying that even though he lost the Democratic primary -- and Republican leaders are now backing him -- his victory in November would still be the best thing for his party.

The Post, like Lieberman, is a strong backer of the Iraq war....

Just as the Post editorial page was endorsing the pro-war candidate in Connecticut, the paper's front page carried a report that painted the war in the worst possible light. It opened, "The war in Iraq has become the primary recruitment vehicle for violent Islamic extremists, motivating a new generation of potential terrorists around the world whose numbers are increasing faster than the United States and its allies are eliminating the threat, U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded.

1. Lieberman winning would be the best thing for his party....
...which apparently he created out of the whole cloth when he abandoned the Democratic Party.

3. Liebernan winning would be the worst thing for
his party, his country, and, believe it or not, for Israel's long term future. Bush and the Neo Cons have done incalculable damage to this country and to Israel. They have risked everything and lost. China will be the next superpower because they hold the IOUs the Neo Cons are using to pay for the failed war in Iraq. Chavez would never have dared to say the things he said about Bush if the U.S. were as strong and admired today as it was under Clinton.

4. His party?
Do they mean the Republican Party?

Why is the WP getting involved in endorsing someone running in a State election? Isn't that unusual?

5. The Washington Post must mean the War Party
The party the Post belongs to. Of course Wash Post is going to endorse Lieberman. They know what side their toast is buttered on.

8. I had that thought too, about them endorsing in a CT election
and then I thought again.

1) Washington, D.C. is a "company town", and people will want to know what the WP thinks.
2) Even though any Senator represents his/her state, everything done in the Senate impacts us all, so any paper anywhere in the country has standing to weigh in on the election of any US Senator.

So, no, it's probabaly not unusual at all, but quite common.

Still, they are SO wrong on this one.

12. Newspapers are only suppose to endorse
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 11:20 AM by DoYouEverWonder
Presidential candidates and their local candidates. They are not suppose to get involved in other city or state's politics. Is the WP going to start endorsing candidates in the other Senate races?

15. They are not supposed to? According to whom?
Where's the rule on that?

And who is to say the WP hasn't endorsed other Senators in the past?

16. It's usually in their editorial guidelines
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 11:37 AM by DoYouEverWonder
There are definitely rules and guidelines for such things. It's okay for the WP to endorse a candidate from MD or DE or even VI, but they are not supposed to get involved in other states politics when it comes to endorsments.

17. Maybe so, but a) we don't know what the WP's rules are, and b)
It's the paper of the Nation's Capital. I'll wager the rules are a bit different there. As I said before, D.C. is a "company town".

10. Operation Mockingbird complete
The WP has been totally taken over by the anti-Constitutionalists and is now serving to parrot whatever the installed government asks them to. I'll look for reporters to soon be put out to pasture...can't have anything controversial in the state's paper.

20. The only thing the editorial is right about
is that there might be a split vote allowing the Repub to take the Senate seat. If this happens, the blame should be squarely placed on Leiberman's shoulders for deliberately giving the Dem Senate seat away.

25. Why is a Washington DC paper endorsing
someone in a senatorial race in CT? I guess because Joe motion long ago stopped representing his state and began representing the Beltway.

27. Since when do people vote as the WP suggests? I think most
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 11:02 PM by wisteria
people ignore these endorsements. If people paid attention to them, then Senator Kerry would be president right now. Kerry was the wise choice for the WP in 04, although they endorsed him reluctantly. It seems they are playing favorites with this choice o Lieberman. What good is experience when it leads you constantly down the wrong path?
