Bush lifts tariffs, trys to avoid sound byte (BBC)
Edited on Thu Dec-04-03 01:27 PM by cmorea
The announcement to life protectionist steel tariffs was made by a spokesman.

This coming the day after fund-raising among pro-tariff citizens, as if to extract the last bit of money from them before seriously angering them.

One interviewee is sure Bush won't carry West Virginia in 2004.

9. Link to story (BBC online)
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/3291537.stm

And a delicious tidbit from the article:

But Ian Rogers, director of UK Steel, a trade body for British steel manufacturers, said: "We give this news a cautiously optimistic welcome.

"We are delighted he has removed the tariffs but we are a bit wary about the announcement that there is to be a licencing system in place to deal with any further surge.

"We are worried that when the small print starts coming out in the next few days there will be a nasty surprise or two.

"His decision to impose tariffs initially was done completely with an eye on his domestic political situation."
(Emphasis added.)

Bu$h-Mart. Always the ulterior motive. ALWAYS.

10. I know they weren't happy about this in 'Knowledge City'
Edited on Thu Dec-04-03 02:40 PM by htuttle
Jon Stewart played a clip last night of Bush's last shake-down speech in Pittsburgh this week, and Bush called Pittsburgh 'Knowledge City'.

Of course, that's what Pittsburgh is famous for you know....right up there with Oxford, Cambridge and Dartmouth...Knowledge City!

13. In defense of Pittsburgh...
...we probably export more college graduates to the four corners of the globe than any other American city. There are very few jobs here in Pittsburgh for recent college graduates, even for those with valuable degrees.

With that said, I'd stack a CMU computer science grad, a Pitt business school grad, or a Duquesne law school grad up against any Ivy League counterpart any day. And our medical universities are Top 10 material, right up there with Johns Hopkins and Mayo.

There's a whole lot of smart in Pittsburgh. The problem is, the civic leaders and business titans are too stupid to appreciate the educated youth of the city.

16. I wouldn't deny that
However, when I, and most people I know, think of Pittsburgh, I think Steel City, not Knowledge City. I mean, your football team isn't called the 'Pittsburgh Scholars', you know...

I think it was the 'Steel City' label that Bush was trying to avoid using...for obvious reasons.

12. He has no fear of being called on it
"The safeguard worked" He's actually going to turn this into a win and will probably get away with it, on the national news but what about MI, WV, OH, and PA?
