Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., bucked a trend by announcing his intention to run for president over the weekend - distinguishing himself from other visiting hopefuls who have dodged the question on their respective visits to Iowa.

Biden swept through eastern Iowa on Sept. 23, stumping and raising money for Democratic congressional hopeful Dave Loebsack during a two-day tour of the state.

"I'm coming back next year to do something else," Biden said near the end of his speech in Cedar Rapids, referring to next fall's run-up to Iowa's January 2008 caucuses, which signal the official start of the presidential election cycle.

Delaware's senior senator touched on health care, the minimum wage, the balance of power in Congress, and the overall direction of the country to the crowd of roughly 40 Democratic supporters.

What a tool. Even though his voting record is not horrible, I think I dislike him more than any other Dem Senator on the basis of personality. Maybe even on par with Leiberman. Every time Biden opens his mouth it just seems way more obviously calculating and designed to get him press and attention than it does for most other people. I am not naive and realize this is the case with most politicians but with Biden I just think he's so shitty at hiding it. There are a number of key policies which our corporations badly need:

*Single-payer universal health-care. American corporations have a hard time competing because they are asked to pickup the tab for healthcare expenses for their employees. This is having devastating effects in a number of key sectors, in particular the auto industry.

*An end to the Iraqi occupation. The war-mongering may help a few isolated companies like Halliburton, but for the vast majority of corporations the drainage of hundreds of billions of dollars from our economy only does harm. (Not to mention the artificial boost in energy prices to which it's been contributing.)

*Economic policies that support sustainable growth. There's been an increasing concentration of wealth in the United States, with the small number of haves and have-mores reaping gains while the vast majority are hurting. Since economic activity is ultimately driven by the sales of goods and services to consumers, it will be very hard for corporations to maintain strong earnings growth if most people don't have money to purchase these goods and services. Hence in the long-run corporations will benefit from policies which promote economic sustainability: a more progressive income tax, pro-labor laws, laxer standards for personal bankruptcy, etc.


To my knowledge, Biden's positions on such issues are woefully lacking.

That bankruptcy bill vote was inexcusable IMO. That said, I would vote for him. Our party is the party with a chance to remove the Repukes from power. The Greens have no momentum, plus it would take a while to get it big. The Repukes need to be out NOW. Plus, SOME Greens have sold themselves to the dark side.

My preferred candidates are Kucinich, Boxer, Gore, or Feingold. Edwards also has a good populist heart - he's just slightly below the rest.
