BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraqi insurgents destroyed a police station in a sustained attack with mortars and a car bomb, the prime minister's office said as attacks around the country left 14 people dead.
The assault was launched with the detonation of a booby-trapped car near the police post in Jorf al-Sakhr, 60 kilometers (35 miles) south of Baghdad.
The blast and a subsequent mortar barrage killed three officers and wounded several more, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said in a statement, which described the attack as having taken place in the previous 24 hours.
Police in the area, a hotbed of insurgent activity, said they were carrying out a security sweep in nearby towns and villages and had arrested 75 suspects.
