Lott threatens the Dems

Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) is threatening to punish Democrats for using an Appropriations Committee room for an unofficial hearing on Iraq oversight if it happens again.

“They better stop this,” the Mississippi Republican said. “This will be the last one or there will be retribution.”

Lott suggested that Republicans could hold GOP-only hearings or seek other forms of payback.
But if he is looking for a culprit in abetting the Democratic Policy Committee’s (DPC) hearing yesterday, he need look no further than fellow Mississippi Republican Thad Cochran, chairman of the Appropriations Committee, who controls the Dirksen Building room that Democrats used yesterday and have used for past hearings.

But Lott and other Republicans are upset that Democrats have gone outside the committee process to highlight the Iraq war before the November election.

“They’re abusing the system,” Lott said.

The Dems hold independent hearings because the Republicans REFUSE to do the job they were elected to do! The Democrats are representing the interests of the people they were elected to serve and by threatening retribution, Mr. Lott is telling millions of people that their voice in Washington is going to be muzzled by the GOP.

are in buildings that belong to American taxpayers. Their salaries are paid by American taxpayers. It doesn't matter who's in the majority - the minority party represents millions of taxpayers and they have the right to use those rooms. I know the GOP disagrees with that - but if they were doing their Constitutional oversight duties, there would be no need for the Dems to hold independent hearings. I hope a Democrat addresses Mr. Lott on the floor of the Senate and makes that point.

When the Democrats were forced to hold hearings in the Basement of the Capitol because the Repubs refused to give them a Hearing Room.
The Repubs weren't even going to let them have the basement until the last minute. And then they scheduled numerous votes for that day that forced the committee members to have to run back and forth between the two events.
