Tampa Port Fails To Get Terror Grant
Tampa Port Fails To Get Terror Grant

By ELAINE SILVESTRINI
Sep 27, 2006

TAMPA - When the Department of Homeland Security handed out $168 million in port security grants, the Port of Tampa was not on the list of recipients.

Port spokesman Andrew Fobes said federal officials didn't give a reason for denying the facility's application for a grant, which would have gone toward security enhancements, including fiber optics and underwater detection and surveillance instruments.

This was the first year since the grants started in 2002 that Tampa was shut out.

3. Not really, no.
Tampa (City of) submitted proposals for 5 sites to receive grant money. There were 24 total proposals in all of Florida. 3 other requests were in Hillsborough County, but outside Tampa's city limits.

Tampa just didn't get any money. It was requested, but not granted.

5. I am disappointed in the people of Tampa every 4 years.

When Hillsborough County goes Red...

I am probably just thinking of the people I know there, but they seem more upset about things like American Idol and praying in school (which is legal anyway) than about real issues.

4. Not that I have much faith that the DHS is doing a good job...
of allocating money to where the threat of attack is greatest, but I do think that the funds should be allocated based on that principle, rather than who got what before or making sure that every jurisdiction in the country gets a share of the pork.
