U.S. Says Zimbabwe Subject to Sanctions
WASHINGTON -- The White House on Wednesday said Zimbabwe is subject to U.S. sanctions because of the government's failure to take steps to halt human trafficking.

The impact is expected to be minimal because of the number of sanctions already imposed against Zimbabwe in recent years.

1. It would be a whole lot easier
if we just came up with a color coded chart or something...

Third world country= those we shit on without fear of retribution.

Second world country= those we shit on but got a couple buisness irons in the fire with.

First world country= those we shit on when we can get away with it.

would cut through some of the policy questions now wouldn't it?

3. I say that we send Hugo to Zimbabwe to call Mugabe names.
Mugabe has done a great job of destroying that country and its economy. He has done a wonderful job of enriching himself and his cronies. In short, he has done everything that Bush has done, only he has done it better and longer.

5. Agreed. Sanction won't hurt Mugabe and his cronies...
Heck, it might make him even richer by increasing his profits on selling goods that become difficult to import. If Saddam Hussein could get rich on sanctions (regardless of what happened to his people), I don't think Mugabe would have a hard time making money on sanctions.

2. People are starving in Zimbabwe
In an effort to get rid of the slums, Mugabe tore down the rickety houses people were living in. Now they live on the streets. Some had small businesses in their homes. Now their livelihoods are also gone. They beg on the streets.
NGOs are banned in Zim.
The rate of inflation is ridiculous. The currency was getting so heavy it was revalued. Now it takes only a suitcase of bills to buy a loaf of bread when it took a wagon load before.

We send grain to be distributed free as food for the hungry. Mugabe sells it.
Zimbabwe was once the breadbasket of Africa, and now it can't even feed its own population.
South Africa won't allow refugees to cross the border. Mozambique doesn't want them either. There's no way to escape the poverty and starvation.

Mugabe arrests political opponents. With the high level of Aides, going to jail for even a few days could end up being a death sentence.

Mugabe is getting pretty old now. I wonder what chaos will ensue when he passes.
