WASHINGTON -- Now that Rep. Bob Ney has agreed to plead guilty to federal
corruption charges, a lucrative wireless license he approved is under review
by the congressional committee he once led.
The House Administration Committee said Wednesday it is reviewing a license
agreement that Ney, R-Ohio, approved in November 2002 for a company
represented by disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The agreement allowed
Foxcom Wireless, a firm then based in Israel, to win a multimillion-dollar
contract from cellphone providers to outfit House office buildings with wireless
receivers.
"There are issues with the license agreement and it's being reviewed by the
committee, but until these issues are resolved, we are unable to comment
on any of the specifics," said Salley Collins, spokeswoman for the committee.
Foxcom Wireless now operates as MobileAccess Networks based in Vienna, Va.
Telephone and e-mail messages left with the firm were not immediately returned
Wednesday.
