S. 3930 passes 65-34
I can't believe that no one has posted this, yet, but I looked and didn't see it. If it's a dupe, I'll delete.

I don't have a final vote tally, yet, but I'd swear I heard Lieberbush and Carper both voted FOR it.

I'll keep checking for the tally.

This is the darkest day in America since 2000. I may quit posting entirely.

5. Here's the list of traitors
Carper (Del.)
Johnson (S.D.)
Landrieu (La.)
Lautenberg (N.J.)
Lieberman (Conn.)
Menendez (N.J)
Pryor (Ark.)
Rockefeller (W. Va.)
Salazar (Co.)
Stabenow (Mich.)
Nelson (Fla.)
Nelson (Neb.)

Might as well say "the usual suspects", by now.

I'll leave this post up. Might as well have it in both forums.

38. Let me just run these suspects throught the DLCerator:
:puke: :puke: :puke:

Anybody have an accurate list of accountable members? They use the "safe seat" "new dems" and the crazies like LIEberman to vote their agenda. I don't know about Menendez.
Stabenow has lost my vote.

TRAITORS! TORTURE PARTY MEMBERS!

DLC | Overview | December 1, 2001
About the Senate New Democrat Coalition

Senators Evan Bayh (IN), Bob Graham (FL), Mary Landrieu (LA), Joe Lieberman (CT) and Blanche Lincoln (AR) founded the Senate New Democrat Coalition (SNDC) in the spring of 2000 to provide a unified voice in the U.S. Senate for progressive ideas, mainstream values, and innovative, market-based policy solutions.

In just over a year, the SNDC has quickly become the strongest and most unified Democratic group in the Senate. With long-time leaders like John Breaux (LA), and a strong class of freshman from the class of 2000 -- including Jean Carnahan (MO), Tom Carper (DE), Ben Nelson (NE), Bill Nelson (FL) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) -- the SNDC's ranks have expanded to 20 members.

The SNDC's legislative agenda focuses on, among other priorities: free-trade initiatives, policies that foster the new economy, fiscal responsibility and greater investments in national security. Of particular note, the SNDC has been pushing to reform federal education policy and improve public schools by simultaneously expanding choice and competition, demanding greater accountability, and increasing investment. The New Democrat "3R's" bill, sponsored by Senators Lieberman, Bayh and Landrieu, among many others, is aimed at overhauling Washington's role in assisting schools and disadvantaged students. The bill is the foundation of the bipartisan education bill that recently passed both chambers and is supported by President Bush.

As the founders of the New Democrat philosophy, the DLC celebrates the success of the Senate NDC, and is confident that will continue to be a force for modernization in the Democratic Party.

60. Yesterday was such a depressing day
I needed Malloy more than ever! I blame the Repukes first, but there's no excuse for these Democrats voting this way IMO. Lautenberg's not even up for re-election, and at his age, you'd think he'd have no reservations about taking Bush on. I'm starting to think SOME of these Democrats really believe in what they are voting for. :-(

11. I believe the reason chimpy and crew pushed so hard for this is...
that there must be things in it that covers his and all of his associate criminals asses retroactively back to the year 1855 (sic). And if it wasn't passed now, if either of the chambers went to the democrats, they would never get it passed.

They are beyond the pale. Its not about terror, or torture. Christ it doesn't matter what the fuks put in it anyways as his signing statement would take care of the little details.

Also don't forget that the SC threw this back to congress cause Roberts couldn't vote. Next time this gets to SC they will rubber stamp it in chimpys favor.

Our country has truly become a banana republic.

And the freepers rejoice....

13. NYT/AP: Senate Passes Detainee Bill Sought by Bush
Senate Passes Detainee Bill Sought by Bush
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: September 28, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate on Thursday endorsed President Bush's plans to prosecute and interrogate terror suspects, all but sealing congressional approval for legislation that Republicans intend to use on the campaign trail to assert their toughness on terrorism.

The 65-34 vote means the bill could reach the president's desk by week's end. The House passed nearly identical legislation on Wednesday and was expected to approve the Senate bill on Friday, sending it on to the White House.

The bill would create military commissions to prosecute terrorism suspects. It also would prohibit blatant abuses of detainees but grant the president flexibility to decide what interrogation techniques are legally permissible.

The White House and its supporters have called the measure crucial in the anti-terror fight, but some Democrats said it left the door open to abuse, violating the U.S. Constitution in the name of protecting Americans.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who helped draft the legislation during negotiations with the White House, said the measure would set up a system for treating detainees that the nation could be proud of. He said the goal "is to render justice to the terrorists, even though they will not render justice to us."...

43. I'm calming down, a bit
Edited on Thu Sep-28-06 10:23 PM by Timbuk3
This legislation, which is almost certain to pass, now, is entirely unacceptable. That will never change, no matter how "calm" I get.

But people are making the point that this passed because the GOP holds the majority, a point that I made when Alito was confirmed.

Alito could have been held up in committee, if the Democrats held the Senate. I'm not as sure, but with a Democratic majority it's just as likely that this heinous bill could have been killed, one way or another. The Democrats are powerless to stop these outrages because WE made them powerless by allowing Republicans (who voted en mass for this travesty) to control our government.

I haven't seen this comment as often, but it's also true that the Democrats didn't roll over quite the way they did on the Iraq War Resolution, JR114. At least most of them voted against it, this time.

So, perhaps I could get some of you to agree with this.

Even though they'll count towards a Democratic majority after the November election, in *my* opinion anyone who voted for this bill is *not* a Democrat. We don't want them, and we'll work to defeat them *in the primaries* every chance we get.

The next time I go overseas I will have to admit to anyone who asks that I'm from a country that "disappears" and tortures people. This is not an American value, and any RW churchie who supports this kind of treatment of their fellow man is not a "christian". Anyone who's desire to avoid paying their fair share to support this country over-rides their disgust with this bill doesn't deserve to call themselves an American. Anyone who's love of big business and the free market who can't see that this is going to KILL our worldwide reputation and eventually harm their profit bottom line is too stupid to reason with.

These Senators have forfeited the right to expect support from any patriot, any American, or any Democrat.

I am NOT happy.

But my options are give up, or fight.

I'm going to fight.

57. Chances are pretty damn excellent that the average
American never heard of this bill and wouldn't give a rat's ass anyway. It's such a shame that if the Senate voted to outlaw American Idol or Monday Night Football, everybody would have an opinion. Legalize torture? Use the Constitution as toilet paper? Yawn.

59. Appalling
I am so disgusted.

200+ years of limited, constitutional government and they've just pissed it all away.

Burn in hell, assholes.

61. Speak out! My LTTE and email to Bill Nelson.

LTTE to the Orlando Slantinel:

Today the Senate of the United States just removed the most basic right any American could claim. The republicans voted to remove the right to Habeas Corpus from the pantheon of rights that we claim. That action alone removed the protection we thought we had with all our other civil rights.

Now, with the nod of just one person - the President of the United States - you, and anyone else, can be declared an 'enemy combatant' , thrown into a black van in the dead of the night, and never seen again. The big point is that without Habeas Corpus you no longer have the right to go before a judge and force the government to show WHY you were imprisoned. You will HAVE no rights anymore.

Some (those who have read some history) have asked how German citizens in the 1930s could allow their nation, once the very picture of a democracy, to slide into fascism. Well, this is how it's done. One step at a time. And this was a huge step.

In fact this act resembles nothing so much as the "Enabling Act" that gave Herr Schicklegruber unfettered power. The power to go to war against the world. The power to invade a sovereign nation in a so called 'preventive' war against Poland. Sound familiar?

But the Republicans are not solely to blame. Democrats could have stopped this with a filibuster. But then we haven't had a functional Democratic Party since the trumped up impeachment of William Jefferson Clinton. The blame falls squarely on both parties. Although it's easy to blame the victim of abuse - Democrats.

As for the Republicans my question is just this: Are you really trying to create a second American Revolution? We have reached the point that 42% of American citizens no longer trust their elections because of Republican control of the voting machines. What's the next step if we can't trust elections? Meet you at the barricades?

One to Bill Nelson, Purported Democrat:

You, sir, are purported to be a United States Senator. As such, your first job is to support, protect. and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.

Your vote yesterday in support of S. 3930 figuratively put a bullet between the eyes of the constitution. The one right preventing any of us from 'disappearing' under a 'Unitary President' or other dictator was the right of Habeas Corpus, the right to have a judge decide if the government has rightly or illegally imprisoned us. Your caving in yesterday removed that right from all of us.

Our now Unitary president can now declare anyone an 'enemy combatant' and that person will have no legal recourse for freedom and can be held for life with no Right t to legal review.

Senator, please tell me when you plan to switch to the Repuglican Party. Under the current regime REAL Democrats will soon have to caucus in Guantanamo.

You have left me with little choice in the coming election. Shall I vote for a Democrat who killed the constitution in 2006, or a Repuglican who killed the constitution in 2000?

Have you no shame, sir?

Finally, have you no shame?
