AP: Carter: Bush has brought U.S. "international disgrace"
Ex-Prez Carter: Bush has brought U.S. "international disgrace"

RENO, Nev. -- Former President Carter is urging northern Nevadans to elect his son, Jack, to the Senate to help combat a Bush administration he says has brought "international disgrace" to the country.

The former president told a crowd of about 300 on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno today that the nation is more sharply divided that it has ever been as a result of Bush's policies.

The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, he says he's deeply embarrassed that the American government now stands convicted around the world as one of the greatest abusers of civil rights. He continued the theme in a dinner speech to 700 at a Democratic fundraiser tonight, saying every past president has been a supporter of human rights, until this one....

***

The former president says that Bush's policies have been a radical departure from what all previous presidents have done, including Republicans like Bush's own father, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon and Dwight Eisenhower.

He says never before has the United States had a policy of pre-emptive war, as was the case in what he called an "ill-advised invasion" of Iraq.

in office again. I am wearing black today, deep in mourning for my country and all it stood for.

4. I got out my mourning band when ray-gun was elected--have been
wearing it since 12/12/00 (the day 5 REPUBLICAN-appointed members of the supreme court overturned our constitution and appointed that prancing jerk president) it is not coming off until we have a government worthy of respect again.

32. Carter coming out swinging will maeke a diffferenc on this issue...
...in the short term. Mid and long term, people will be revolted and avoid the perpetrators of this crime or seek some restitution. These are extremely dark days for the USA.

sent photos and info of two Carter appearances. There were older veterans in their uniforms there, standing with the Carters. It's the most hopeful
thing I've seen all week.

Everyone I know hates and despises Bush.

I really respect Carter, however. I wish you had a president like him now, instead of Bush and his owner Cheney.

18. Their Crimes, Our Crimes
Our media, including much of the internet, does not give
us the full story about why things happen the way they do.
The most glaring silence in this country is about the causes
for terrorism and the facts regarding the U.S. using force
which could and has been condemned internationally many times
in the past and present. Thomas P.M. Barnett is someone
connected to the Naval War College or something regarding the
defense establishment, and many times espouses the U.S.
establishment doctrine on ruling the world. C-Span has him on
multiple times, whereas I've never seen Michael Parenti, who
documents U.S. malfeasence abroad and at home, on at all. The
U.S. has corporate interests that are still busy to my
knowledge extracting the wealth of Iraq, most notably through
P.S.A.'s, or Production Sharing Agreements, which subtly allow
oil companies to extract wealth from Iraq's oil deposits. So
getting the full story, which politicians hide from you as
well as the media, will explain the reasons why people get so
angry at this country. The spying and detention programs are
designed to punish resistance to this imperialism. One must
be careful about how to live under this repression, and
knowing the truth can make you a target for the powerful to
harrass.

23. I served in the army when Pres. Carter was commander-in-chief
I have to say that I am quite proud of that 3 year stint, no invasions, the military did what the founding fathers designed it to do, although I didn't realize how lucky I was to be in the service at that particular era, compared to the other administrations, including the Clinton years.

Edited on Fri Sep-29-06 07:44 PM by flaminbats
Its sad to think that Nixon's behavior would eventually be considered the norm for our political leaders.

But I think its great Carter's son is running for the Senate, we couldn't ask for a candidate better shaped by morality.

Kicked!

Jimmy Carter was very gracious to the volunteers. As a thank you afterwards, he and his son Jack had pictures taken with each of the volunteers. It was a great boost to the morale of the campaign volunteers for his son's Senate campaign.

29. Nice sentiment, but not totally true.
For example, under Clinton cancer victims suffered from a lack of compassion that sometimes put them in prison for smoking a beneficial plant (marijuana) to ease their pain.

IMHO, the illegality of marijuana is itself a human rights abuse.

But yes, he is a disgrace, President Carter. Very much so.

35. Jimmy Carter for President in 2008!
Yes I know he is an old man now, but if his health permits it would be great to have him back in office. He only served one term so he is still eligible for a second term. Who better to bind up the wounds that the current occupant of the White House has inflicted on the World? We could hardly offer the electorate a more decent and experienced candidate for this high office IMO.
