The CIA'S top counterterrorism officials felt they could have killed Osama Bin Laden in the months before 9/11, but got the "brushoff" when they went to the Bush White House seeking the money and authorization.

CIA Director George Tenet and his counterterrorism head Cofer Black sought an urgent meeting with then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice on July 10, 2001, writes Bob Woodward in his new book "State of Denial."

They went over top-secret intelligence pointing to an impending attack and "sounded the loudest warning" to the White House of a likely attack on the U.S. by Bin Laden.

Woodward writes that Rice was polite, but, "They felt the brushoff."

In OCTOBER of last year, I said that I thought Book Three would be a shitstorm:

Subject: I know exactly what Woodward is doing

He is greedy, he is GOP, but he is NOT STUPID. I have said this before, and I will say it again, because I believe it to be true.

Bobby has written TWO books on the Monkey: PLAN OF ATTACK and BUSH AT WAR. These literary hummers did very well, for the same reason that Ann Coulter's books do well--they are shopped about as party favors to the GOP faithful. Anyone who paid full price didn't donate sufficiently to the party, and not only that, they got a lousy read.

Woodward clearly is looking for a trifecta--the final volume of his LORD OF THE DINKS trilogy, as it were. So, in order to ensure that his subject isn't pissed off at him, he goes on TV and plays loyal, fawning foot soldier. In this fashion he retains the INCREDIBLE access, better than anyone else, really, that he has to the Monkey. And oh, to be a fly on the wall in these troubled times!!!!

But the way things are going, the GOP ain't gonna wanna buy up his book this time, seeing as even they are less than thrilled with Bush, his lousy plans of attack, and least of all, his bungled war. Accordingly, this last episode has to have some real, brutal TRUTH in it. I suspect Book Three is gonna be considerably more honest than the last two.

3. I wasn't going to buy this book - but after the NYT expose

and this NY Daily News piece, I'm anxiously awaiting the WP excerpts and of course the 60 Minutes broadcast.

I think as much as I hate to put money in Woodward's pocket I'm going to be at B&N lunch time on Monday to get this book. I have the feeling this book is going to be the talk all next week and this is going to be one helluva nail in the Bush Admin coffin. I gotta read this one ASAP.
