WASHINGTON — Democratic leaders today used excerpts from a new book by Bob Woodward to unleash a scathing attack on President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq.
Woodward's 537-page book on the administration's handling of the war, State of Denial, , describes the administration as beset by infighting, according to The New York Times, which obtained a copy and reported on its contents today. The book officially is released Monday.
According to the Times, Woodward writes that the White House ignored an urgent warning in September 2003 from a top Iraq adviser who said that thousands of additional U.S. troops were desperately needed to quell the insurgency there.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Ill., said today that it is "deeply troubling that that state of denial continues to this day. If the president refuses to see problems in Iraq, he's not going to see ways to change the dynamic in Iraq."
Levin, joined by several senators at a news briefing on the book, says Bush "has got to end his stubborn insistence that everything is going just fine in Iraq."
