Jenna Bush is UNICEF intern (in Panama)
Panama City: US President George W. Bush’s daughter Jenna is working as an intern at the Unicef regional headquarters in Panama, located on a former US military base, a local newspaper has reported. The front-page, photo-illustrated story in La Prensa said that Jenna, 24, entered the Unicef building in Clayton, 15 kilometres southwest of the capital near the Pacific opening of the Panama Canal, with her passport.

She is temporarily residing in a home in Clayton, the newspaper said on Friday. The Panamanian front-page report echoed US media frenzy over the infrequent sightings of "The First Twins", as Jenna and her fraternal twin Barbara are known. Bush and his wife, first lady Barbara, have gone to great lengths to keep their only children out of the spotlight.

Teacher Twin Ready for Takeoff
By Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts
Thursday, June 29, 2006; C01

.. Friends say .. the .. Twin .. plans .. a teaching job in Latin America ... "First-year teaching is one of the most difficult jobs a person can have," said Linda Moore, head of the Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School, where Jenna and a fellow instructor oversaw a class of third-graders being taught in both English and Spanish ...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/29/AR2006062900070_pf.html

That's smoother than Moore's previous WP quote:

Reliable Source
By Richard Leiby
Sunday, January 16, 2005; Page D03

... The First Daughter and Her First Job ...

After hearing rumblings in recent days that Jenna had started at the Stokes school as a teaching assistant, we called executive director Linda Moore. "Jenna Bush is not employed as a teacher at the school," she bluntly informed us Friday. Asked whether Bush was working as an assistant teacher, Moore said: "I can't confirm that." ...

So the teaching career remains somewhat mysterious

7. if she hangs around overseas with UN staff for a long time ...
... she might get quite a different view of her father's administration than if she stays in the US and watches Fox News (or works for one of his corporate cronies). After having to go around cleaning up his messes, often at the risk of their own lives, the UN people I know are pretty critical (my boss, for example).

Not saying that Jenna would turn into Amy Carter overnight ... but it's a possibility.

16. I enjoyed living in the Country of Panama for two years
Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 08:10 PM by ShortnFiery
during the 90s. If there were justice she'd be downtown Colon (75% unemployment) mixing it up with the gang boys, i.e., a city in destitute poverty - port town. However, I think she's getting sh*t faced and laid every night ... yep, living "high on the hog" in with *the elites* in Panama City, i.e., Ft. Clayton is on the "haves" side of the Isthmus.

Those great Social Scientists "Poison" put it best (with my modification) ==>

I pass the homeless sleeping in a damn dark street
Like bodies in a stone cold grave ...

But across the Isthmus live the rich folk
And you should see how they're living it up
While the Poor Ones live from hand to mouth
Rich drink from the golden cup

And it just makes me wonder
Why so many lose
And so few win

And Give Me Something To Believe in ... Like there's A Lord above.

Panama! A beautiful country with no middle class. Beautiful people living in very austere conditions while The Wealthy "live it up." I'm sure The People of Panama are thrilled to host this Party Girl.

20. She's loved there. Her grandfather Poppy killed about 2,000 Panamanians.
Operation JUST CAUSE, so named because of a phonied-up confrontation between Panamanian Defense Forces and U.S. officer and his wife, was really designed to take out Manuel Noriega, CIA asset, narcotics trafficker, money launderer and and one-time friend of George Herbert Walker Bush. In the rush to kill Noriega, Bush ordered the armed forces to torch a city neighborhood. Several thousand may've died. Noriega survived by hiding in the Vatican embassy. The priests finally kicked him out after hearing PSYOPs music day after day.

21. i've seen anti bush graffiti in panama city
however this is a very forward-looking people, i get no impression that they hate americans for the crimes of *co, and i would be surprised if they would hate on jenna for the crimes of her dad and her grand-dad, nobody chooses their parents

i wouldn't blame them if they did, but they just don't seem to be that way, they seem to take each person as he or she is

michael moore put the number of panamanians killed in the capture of noriega at 3,000 IIRC, a cruel and terrible day

maybe jenna's trying to make up for something, we just don't know from here

If she truly makes a change, she's welcome - but as long as she feels comfortable to stick her tongue out at The Public, I don't want her in our party. But it's a free country. If she feels a need to shed the filth that is "The Bush Dynasty" that would be too cool.

...I would be just as happy never to have known either of Bush's twit offspring. If the criminal had been satisfied screwing up Texas instead of screwing up this country killing other people's kids in illegal and immoral wars, this wouldn't be a worry, now would it?

Bush is treating other - poor and lower middle class - kids with the disrespect of serving as mercenaries in a war of imperialism instead of as defenders of our land. So excuse me if I don't give a damn of either boobsy twin is being disrespected or not.

32. she has money, why get a job?
i don't quite see the point of taking a job that could be held by someone who actually needs to earn a living

if she's actually doing good and raising funds for the kids using her family name, that's fine, if it's just a way to keep her out of public eye while she parties, then who is it hurting? getting a job, considering that good jobs are limited, takes something away from somebody else in this zero-sum game that is real life

we don't need all the good jobs filled by sons and daughters of the rich and privileged

Those daughters are such humanitarians. They certainly didn't learn it from moron* or maybe they learned it from their murdering mother.

They maybe filled with the eagerness of youth, can't deny them that, but I wonder if they would have gotten such plumb assignments if they were anyone else's daughters.

I'm sure they are hard at work changing the world.

her sister worked in an orphanage for AIDS orphans in South Africa, now Jenna will work with UNICEF.

This is good, in the sense that it will help with our relationships within the UN. If the President's daughter is working with one of their programs, it sends the message that the US is supporting at least that program of the UN's.

50. Well I know Jenna, and if you ever want to look in the archives
I have always stood up for here, because I know for a fact that she isn't her father. She is against the war and despite the fact that she was born to privilege and into a pretty twisted family she has plenty of compassion and contrary to the news reports (I was just as drunk as here in college) she has plenty of class too, and was always very nice. She was even best friends with a kid who described himself as the gayest blackest man at Yale.

Just some food for thought.

Yes, the apple, so far, hasn't fallen far from the tree.

If good ole Jenna is so Anti-War, why did she avidly campaign for "Daddy."

If she forfeits all her wealth and joins the Peace Corps, I'd laud everything about her person ... but that ain't going to happen.

She's like Paris Hilton - disgustingly out of touch with reality.

I guess since I didn't forfeit it all then what I am doing now doesn't count.

60. I don't know what you are talking about, but I can recognize the
underpinnings of alcoholism. Hey, I was a problem drinker in College and have since worked in Addiction Counseling. Jenna's behavior has gone beyond Problem Drinking into Alcoholism. :( I may not *know Jenna* as much as you think you know her, but I know Panama and the Elites who live there. Therefore, I can claim with confidence: Jenna's drunk on her a** tonight. ;)

Edited on Mon Oct-02-06 10:09 PM by LeviathanCrumbling
and unless you know what it is like to spend your days working for UNICEF in Panama you should probably not act as if you know anything. I know the woman and I know the work she is doing, why do you feel the need to attack her for doing something good for the world.

Edit: She is a woman now not a girl, had to change that.

71. That's not just a little group-guilt, ShortnFiery
I think this is as disgusting a conclusion I've read about an individual, based on some group dynamic you believe in...

"I may not *know Jenna* as much as you think you know her, but I know Panama and the Elites who live there. Therefore, I can claim with confidence: Jenna's drunk on her a** tonight."

Awful. Without a sliver of evidence, you "claim with confidence." Is it a religious belief, or some other belief system, that everyone is the same in a group, and you don't have to have evidence to believe in something?

When I don't "know" something, I don't "claim with confidence," ShortnFiery. My suggestion: evidence first, conclusions after that.

75. Exactly
If at any point in time she turns into another Bush-Bot (and I am not saying that it can't happen) then I will be one of the first to toss stones, but the girl she is trying to do something good here and people should let her have a chance.

65. You'd sure think that Jenna would come out and tell the media
that her old man is full of crap.

Friends with gayest blackest man at Yale, makes Jena okay? Class has nothing to do with being a complete waste. Jenna has power and could be doing a lot of great things for humanity.

Edited on Mon Oct-02-06 10:23 PM by LeviathanCrumbling
She spent a lot of time up at Yale visiting Babs (who is also a great girl) and she only saw people as people not as races or sexual orientations, I think that says something. Right now she is working for freaking UNICEF! She is doing something for humanity, WTF do you do?

I think it is great that a woman with her options has made the choice to spend her time as a giver and not a taker.

UNICEF=GOOD

UNICEF= Hard work with little reward

I tell you what why don't you go down to the third world and teach some kids and then perhaps you would have the right to talk, but I am pretty damn good friends with a whole lot of people who work for UNICEF and none of them would talk smack about someone else willing to do that work.

BTW by class I ment that she was a classy girl, you know the type of person that would never call a total stranger a complete waste.

UNICEF and you can bet is isn't for the hours or the money. Then again you are willing to judge someone based on a snapshot so I guess I know a little bit more about you then you do about her.

66. she did say that she didn't think her dad should run for President
So I'm crediting her with being that sensible! I wonder if that's why he retaliated by calling her a "whiner" to the press? I can't recall him ever coming out with a spontaneous compliment about either of the girls, about them being smart or creative or athletic, or at least having interests and future plans. I suppose that GWB might just be "discreet" about his family, but if so, why would he come out with so many casual put-downs about Laura and the twins? I've always felt a bit sorry for them (I work at a college so I see plenty of kids from messed-up backgrounds, wealthy families too).

57. Good for her! I hope to see a Bush family member actually help people..
Maybe she and Barbara can use their name to make some positive changes in the world... though it would take a thousand of those girls to undo the damage the long line of Bushs have done to the world. But it's a start...

69. Why should she go there?
is it because she protested against the war, or because she is in a third world country trying to make the world a better place?

I personally think that no one should go to Iraq, but you obviously share more of the views of the administration then I do if you think that more of our nations youth should be sent there.

85. Jenna Bush PROTESTED against the war?
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 07:04 PM by Anakin Skywalker
When was this? I don't expect any Bushie children to be courageous enough to defy their elders. "Honor thy daddy" or something like that.

And aren't you taking things a little too seriously here? No one in this thread is dissing UNICEF, just a Bushling, OK?

Jenna "working" for UNICEF is just a publicity stunt to show "hey, we rich snobs care too". She will NEVER, ever be sent to Iraq for anything, so don't worry about it.

87. The Bushling is a person trying to do a good thing
and the fact is that it is very disrespectful to talk about any UNICEF job as a glamor job, because they don't exist. I both know many people who work for UNICEF and I know the sisters. You don't know the sisters and you don't know their politics all you know is that you hate their father (you ever wonder how they might feel about him) and that they drank beer in college.

Perhaps when people judge strangers and hate them for no reason other then the nature of their birth it makes me see red, and it should make all good people see red. We need less of that type of thinking if we are ever going to heal our country.

She's probably hanging out with the elites. I see this as nothing more than resume fluffing. A lot of people help others without the need to announce their benevolence, why does she need to advertise?

I know plenty of people who have worked with UNICEF including the founder of the first youth chapter and they take what they do very seriously. It is pretty freaking sick to suggest that someone who protested against the war and is doing something good for the world should be sent over there.

Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 07:53 PM by LeviathanCrumbling
their parents are and if we don't like there parents enough send them to die. Thinking like that makes me sick, a lot of people feel that way about me because I come from a mixed marriage. I wish we lived in a world where people where judged by what they did not the situation they were born into.

And by the way don't ever accuse someone working for UNICEF of any ulterior motive, the work they do is absolutely back breaking and heart breaking and it is despicable to trash them and their organization.

Must be from a writer from a culture that expects far, far more children in the average family. That is my best guess.

I didn't get the link to work.
