(CNN) -- Democrats used the Foley scandal to turn up the heat on Republicans on Saturday, a month before congressional elections that put control of the House and Senate at stake.
The Democrats devoted their weekly radio address to the matter, accusing the Republican leaders in the House of ignoring then-Rep. Mark Foley's "obvious predatory signals" in order "to protect their political power."
Foley, who quit as a Florida representative last month, is said to have sent sex messages over the Internet to teenage boys who had been congressional pages. Republican leaders, including Speaker Dennis Hastert, are accused of knowing about Foley's behavior and not stopping it.
Patty Wetterling, a candidate for a U.S. House seat whose own son Jacob was kidnapped when he was 11 and never seen again, spoke on behalf of the Democrats.
"We need to stop the sexual exploitation of children across the country, and in Washington we must hold accountable all those complicit in allowing this victimization to happen," said Wetterling, a Minnesota child safety advocate .....................
