250 Cartons Of Lettuce Missing
7 Western States Are Searched, In Recall Because Of E.Coli Caution
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 10, 2006

(AP) The company that recalled its lettuce after irrigation water tested positive for E. coli is scrambling to locate 250 remaining cartons of the greens, which could be in any of seven Western states.

Nunes Co. Inc. issued the voluntary recall Sunday of more than 8,500 cartons of green leaf lettuce grown on one farm in the Salinas Valley, the lush growing region at the center of a nationwide outbreak of spinach-borne E. coli that killed three people and made 199 others sick.

By Monday morning, all but 250 cartons of the lettuce distributed under the Foxy brand between Oct. 3 and Oct. 6 had been located and were being destroyed, company President Tom Nunes said. The search continued for the remaining cartons, which Nunes said were believed to be in supermarkets or restaurants in Arizona, California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

"If we can get it all back, I'll be a happy camper," Nunes said, emphasizing that the recall was a precaution taken once the company realized there was bacteria in the irrigation water used on the farm.

the Fascist Bills Passed to allow feed lot ranchers to do something deadly and nefarious to cheaply dump their BullShit.

who cares if it crashes the economy of California.. some Repuke cattle farmer saved a couple dollars.

8. Just over a week ago, I went to the store to buy lettuce.
The lettuce was organic, but the tag didn't indicate its origin, so I asked. It came from Salinas Valley. Funny, I opted instead for the locally grown organic spinach.

Now I shop for fresh produce at either the farmers market on Wednesday and Saturday, or at New Seasons, where they state where the produce is grown. I will only buy local, which means I likely won't be having many more salads before spring.

10. OK, I'll bite...how many heads of lettuce in a "carton?"
For those of us who are agri-lingo challenged...

I did find this:

PACKAGING

All packaging is done before vacuum cooling. Iceberg or head lettuce may be closely trimmed and wrapped in film. Polyethylene films are most common but new PVC films maintain freshness longer. PVC films are also easier to wrap and result in a neater wrapping.

Iceberg lettuce: commonly packaged in 43 to 48-lb, 24-count, cartons.
Boston lettuce: commonly packaged in 20-lb cartons.
Romaine lettuce: commonly packaged in 24-count cartons.
Leaf lettuce: commonly packaged in 20 to 25-lb or 24-count cartons.
Bibb lettuce: commonly packaged in 10-lb cartons.
Greenhouse lettuce: commonly packaged in 10-lb cartons.
